Dating from 1913, The Grande Colonial is an upscale hotel, it is a 6-minute walk from the ocean at La Jolla Cove and 3 miles from the Birch Aquarium.
Elegant rooms with goose-down bedding and bathrobes feature flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers and free Wi-Fi, and some have period features and/or water views. Suites offer extra living space; some have fireplaces and/or full kitchens. In-room massages are available for a fee.
Amenities include a heated pool and access to a nearby health club, and a classy restaurant with outdoor seating serves farm-to-table cuisine. Valet parking is available for a fee, and there’s 5,300 sq ft of meeting and event space.
Other than my room having bedbugs it's a good hotel and location. I spent two nights in a room in the Little Hotel by the Sea part of the Grande Colonial. After the first night I noticed red bites around my neck and thought it might be mosquitoes or some kind of allergic reaction. After the second night I noticed more bites on many parts of my body and suspected bed bugs. In total I got over a dozen bites.
I reported the issue and the hotel was able to move me to a new room. The hotel refunded two nights of the stay. Since it was a business trip, I did not benefit financially from the refund. They also provided laundry service and some equipment I requested. The hotel confirmed that after inspecting the room they did find two live bugs. I don't know if the hotel could/should have done more to prevent the issue, but a dozen bites in two nights seems like a lot to me.
One other minor complaint I have is that the smoke alarms in the rooms blink a noticeable light that makes it hard to sleep. Guests should bring an eye mask.

I had an absolutely amazing stay at the Grande Colonial easily a five-star experience from start to finish. The location is unbeatable, right next to the water with stunning views and everything you could possibly need within walking distance. Being able to step outside and instantly be in the heart of it all made the trip so much more enjoyable.
One of the standout perks was the fantastic valet service, especially with free overnight parking, which made everything seamless and stress-free. I also loved the complimentary bikes, they were perfect for cruising along the beach and taking in the scenery at a relaxed pace.
The hotel itself has such a welcoming and charming atmosphere. The pool area was ideal for unwinding, whether it was a quiet morning or a relaxing afternoon break. And the on-site, award-winning restaurant was incredible delicious food, great ambiance, and top-tier service without even having to leave the property.
What really made the stay exceptional, though, was the customer service. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, attentive, and genuinely committed to making the experience memorable.
Between the unbeatable location, thoughtful amenities, and outstanding service, this hotel truly has it all. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a perfect coastal getaway.

I spent 4 nights at the Grande Colonial with family. The pros - nice property, great location - walk to the beach and many neighborhood restaurants. I picked a vacation rental unit that was located away from Prospect Street with a kitchen, living room and bedroom, it was quiet and secluded and I saw almost no one that side. The unit was well furnished and the bedding was comfortable. The pool was clean and inviting, though it was not heated.
Cons - issue with water pressure and hot water - showers had to be relatively quick, the water temperature would fall and the pressure would drop after around 6 mins in the shower. The TVs were ancient and didn't work, they were supposed to have tech that would let you cast to their TV from your personal devices, nothing worked, not even after tech support stopped by. The stove wouldn't stay lit, I had to ask for help again. The unit we picked had a lot of stairs to climb, and I was unaware of this when I checked in. I would have appreciated some assistance when I was checking in and checking out as it was a hassle to lug our suitcases up and down the stairs, none was offered. Walls are thin, could hear screaming kids in the unit next to us. Customer service was polite, but lacking warmth.
Overall, despite all these cons, I did like enjoy my stay mainly due to the location. It was great to not to have to drive everywhere and to wake up to the sounds of the seagulls and the smell of the ocean. A pretty solid 4 stars.
