  Disgusting smell in the room, over-deodorized! Bad front desk service. Old, dirty. Do better Holiday Inn!

  I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Terrell and had a less than desirable experience. We booked two rooms, one queen suite and one queen standard room. I’ll start with the positives. There aren’t many, but the staff was incredibly kind and gracious. The two front desk attendants I talked to were both very nice, helpful, and kind. The lady working the breakfast area was also extremely friendly. So in terms of staff, I was happy with my experience. Aside from that, everything else was not great. When we arrived that night, it was about 10 p.m. Part of my group got there closer to midnight. The elevators were not working, and our rooms were on the fourth floor, so we had to haul all of our luggage up four flights of stairs. I get that it was late at night and hard to get someone out to fix that, but the next morning around 9:30 it was still not working. That was a huge inconvenience, especially with two small kids. Carrying them up and down stairs was not ideal. As for our room, the queen suite smelled absolutely horrible. It reeked of stale cigarettes the second we walked in. I had to sign several papers at check-in saying we would not smoke in the room, which we obviously didn’t, but the room itself smelled like someone had smoked in there nonstop. This was the room my kids and I stayed in, and all of our belongings smelled like a nasty, dirty bar by the time we got home. It was awful, and definitely not something I expected or felt comfortable having my small children sleep in. I also have no idea when the last extermination was, but it either wasn’t recent or it wasn’t effective. We found several bugs alive in the room and had to kill them. The bathroom had quite a few. It was honestly pretty gross. The hotel itself was not updated, which is fine, because I don’t expect every hotel to be remodeled, but paired with the smoke smell, the bugs, and the general condition, it’s pretty obvious that management or corporate doesn’t put much care into this property. The area itself was quiet, which was nice, but honestly I feel like that might be why the hotel hasn’t been kept up. I will not stay here again. I’ll choose a hotel in a neighboring town and pay more before I book this one again.

  I find my opinions divided on the Holiday Inn Express in Terrell. The staff were friendly and the place is kept immaculately clean. However, maintenance on this hotel is lacking and it shows. Half of the lights in the parking lot were either burned out or malfunctioning, which causes a bit of a strobe light effect. This isn’t a helpful circumstance if it is shining in your room’s window. There were many areas of peeling paint and hastily repaired areas on the walls and ceilings. The carpet is well-worn and could use replacement. The WiFi also is terrible here; it barely works and goes out often. On the positive side, the included breakfast is quite nice, with a multitude of options. The indoor pool and hot tub were also well maintained and a treat to use. Overall, if the owners of this hotel would invest in maintaining this property, it would be a five star experience. I fear that it may find itself downgraded into a lower tier of hotel franchise if it’s kept in this condition much longer.
