Stayed for a night on our drive from out west. Checkin was fast and were given a room on the first floor.. Went into the room from the main hallway and found the room actually had a second door direct to the parking lot. That was kind of cool, so we parked right outside that door and it made for unloading and loading the car a lot easier. (Only issue with this outside door was all the gravel/dirt from winter sanding of parking lot and the amount of cigarette butts....there were a lot.
Parking lot was really full......a few open spots at the back. After parking and cehcking in, we ended up walking to a local restaurant to ensure we kept a parking spot. At 6am when leaving, the entire parking lot was packed with many cars parked in interesting places!
The room seemed small and it seemed like the furniture was crammed together.Of the two queen beds, one was squeaky from the wood frame and didn't seem as solid as the other one.
The price point of the hotel is quite a lot ($250/night). Compared to our other hotels on the trip, (around $150/night) this was the most expensive room and was the least pleasant appeal.
Perhaps rooms on upper floors are a lot nicer???
Breakfast opens at 6:30am but didn't go as we were on the road at 6am.....other restaurants on our trip were open at 6am, which was ideal for early travellers. I wish hotels would post the breakfast times on their websites!)
Overall I think I'd find another hotel to stay at in Thunder Bay.

I apologize, this hotel was Excellent
It was the Howard Johnson that was horrible.
I will preface this by saying that staff were absolutely amazing! Their mascot dog is adorable and very friendly :D
The grade is solely based on hotel room experience. As an experienced hotel industry worker, here are the points management should take into consideration and rectify as soon as possible. Our room was not ready at guaranteed check-in time, the sheets were dirty (hair, fulky wrinkled sheets, stains, pillow cases that reeked of sweat and body odors) to the point we had to retrieve new ones from housekeeping and remake our beds, AC full of dust and extremely noisy, rooms are not soundproof at all (could hear luggage wheeling around in the hallway), the room doors both exterior and interior are not sealed properly as you can see daylight through both (which could explain the lack of soundproofing), fan in the bathroom did not work, crumbs and dirt found all around the carpet in the room, paint lifting in the bathroom due to the lack of ventilation.
Plus side : Breakfast selection surpassed my expectations and was very decent. Also included in room price.
Note : We stayed on a weekeday end of March, housekeeping was headed to our room when we arrived after check-in time (a single cleaning lady) who was in and out of there within 10 minutes to clean an entire two double bed room... No discount or apologies were made for a 300$+/night room.
Great experience, fast check in, quiet and clean room, and great breakfast… eggs, bacon, waffles, fruit, yogurt, cereal and love that there is the option to bring to your room. Interesting fact - the breakfast is served on the third floor.
The only complaint maybe would be the huge gap under the door towards the hallway but noise level was fine.
