  The threshing barn was originally on John Young's farm in Mendon, NY. John Young was Brigham Young's father. The skeleton (hand hewn square timbers) are original. The barn was used to store grain (barley, oats, wheat) in shocks and then threshed into grain with a flail during winter months. Shocks of grain were thrown onto the threshing floor and flailed to seperate grain from fodder and chaff, which were blown away with the winter winds, west to east. There is a tool bent below the hay mow as well as grain bins to store the finished product. Animals and livestock were kept in other structures on the Smith farm, this building was used only for grain storage and production. The Church History Department has done a fantastic job of reconstruction and missionaries tell the experience of the Smith family in their daily work to provide for their needs during the 1820's. The cooper shop which stands nearby is also an excellent reconstruction of what the Smith's would have had in the timeframe of the late 1820's and a fascinating story of the Gold Plates hidden within the flags (rushes from nearby Hathaway Brook) in the attic here is very faith promoting. God did protect the plates and the Smith family from thieves and robbers as he said he would.
