The monument and surrounding Hill Cumorah area are peaceful, beautifully maintained, and full of historical significance. Moroni buried the gold plates in this year thousands of years ago and instructed Joseph Smith in the early 1800's on where to find them. The plates were later translated and published as the Book of Mormon.
