Erected in 1935 at the crest of the hill where Joseph Smith was given the gold plates, the monument depicts the angel Moroni, who appeared to the young prophet and told him where to find the buried record.
There is a beautiful new visitors' center, which we enjoyed, but having just sprained my ankle, we were unable to hike up to the actual monument.

I’m not a member of the LDS Church, but visiting the Angel Moroni Monument was genuinely enlightening. The monument and surrounding Hill Cumorah area are peaceful, beautifully maintained, and full of historical significance. It was interesting to learn about the beliefs and history associated with the site, and I appreciated how welcoming and informative the environment was for visitors of all backgrounds. it’s completely free to visit! Highly recommend if you’re in the area and enjoy learning about different cultures and faith traditions.

This is a beautiful reminder of the amazing events that transpired here. Moroni buried the gold plates in this year thousands of years ago and instructed Joseph Smith in the early 1800's on where to find them. The plates were later translated and published as the Book of Mormon.
