Very disappointing stay at Cancun Resorts by Hilton. I stayed one night with my family (Dec 31–Jan 1). Vegas hotels are very overpriced on New Year’s, which I accepted—expecting at least basic comfort. The main purpose of a hotel is to rest, and this stay failed at that. The AC was poorly balanced: the bedroom stayed hot while the living room became freezing, making it hard to sleep after returning late from New Year’s Eve. The fabric dining chairs felt damp/clammy to the touch (not visibly wet), which was uncomfortable and unpleasant. After I got home, I filed a complaint. Instead of addressing the issues, management criticized me for not complaining during the stay, despite it being a one-night stay, returning very late, and having a 10 AM checkout. Their resolution was a $39 credit, which felt dismissive given the New Year’s pricing. I stay with Hilton often (Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites) and usually have no issues—this experience was an exception, and unfortunately a bad one. P.S. I escalated this and received points instead. I am expecting better from this company. So much for my loyalty to Hilton.

I’ve enjoyed staying at this hotel for years, which is why I booked a two-day stay for New Year’s. But this time around was frustrating. Check-in isn’t until 4 PM and check-out is at 10 AM, yet you’re charged for two full days. That math isn’t mathing. Being told it’s for housekeeping doesn’t make it feel any better, it shouldn’t come at the cost of guests’ time and money. Waiting until 4 PM to get into a room and having to leave by 10 AM just doesn’t feel fair.

This hotel has a ridiculous guest policy. There is a security guard at the entrance who stops anyone but registered guests from coming on site. They can’t need get to the front desk if you’re not on the guest list. I had a local friend who was coming over to say hello but couldn’t get into the parking lot because he wasn’t staying there. Even though he had my name and room number he was turned away. I had to leave my room, go down to the front desk and register him just so he could pop by and say hi in his lunch break. He wasn’t even staying the night, but they still questioned why he was coming to visit, as if it is anyone’s business. This also happened at noon so it’s not like security keeping strangers out at night or anything. Apparently the policy is you’re only allowed six visitors and they each have to be added to the reservation each time. Such a backward policy for Las Vegas.

Here is where people get confused. This is NOT a hotel. This is a vacation club. Once you understand the difference and set realistic expectations then you will get it. That being said, your room will not get cleaned everyday and there is no free breakfast. Those are two of the most major complaints. HGV resorts usually have good-sized room/apartments that include a kitchen with full-size appliances. The Cancun Resort stands out for its huge pool with water slides. Our room was pretty bag, very large bathroom with a huge tub. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. For an HGV resort this place is pretty nice. If you aren’t an HGV member trust me they will try their best to sell you a timeshare/club membership. Just know that going into it. Do your research and make an informed decision. If you have no interest and have never had an interest in owning a timeshare do not let their high-pressure sales techniques sway you. Stand your ground, listen to their spiel and walk away. But if you are interested in buying a timeshare, hold out as long as possible because the deal gets better the longer you negotiate.
