This is an amazing hotel. The rooms are immaculately clean, the public spaces are immaculately clean, the breakfast is excellent, the staff are truly excellent - welcoming, friendly, professional, kind. I stay in a lot of hotels for work, and this one was one of the very best. I can't recommend it enough.
Do NOT book this hotel on a debit card, as I lazily did. Be absolutely sure to dig deeper into your wallet and use a credit card.
I check in. Bill is $330 for two nights. Without asking me, an extra $100 gets added to the bill. Fair enough, that's the deposit. Entirely OK and understandable, I have no problem with that. I'm here in Hillsborough, NC, with a $430 pending charge on my card. When I check out, the extra $100 will fall off the card. Cool.
I check out. They tell me they'll email me a receipt. Cool.
Next day, I check my bank account. The pre-auth is now well over $500. After I have checked out, it's actually gone up. I call and and ask. They say, "We don't know why. Is it your bank?"
"No. It's not a bank issue, OK? Banks don't make additional charges to cards, only merchants do that."
Charge for the room was $330. Deposit (never discussed until I asked, later) was $100. Total pre-auth was $430. That's fine. After I checked out pre-auth went up to over $500. Then more. That's not fine.
"It'll sort itself out."
Yeah, it will. I'm sure. I don't have a major problem with this. It'll sort itself out. If it doesn't, I'll be right back on the phone.
If you are on a tight budget and can't afford to have $200+ tied up while "it sorts itself out," don't pay with a debit card, here. You might be sad.
Excellent hotel. Excellent staff. Payment processing needs some work. I asked for an email receipt at about 2pm today, long after I had checked out and after I had phoned and complained about the payment issue. It's now 9.30pm and I don't have an email receipt; you said you'd send it "immediately."
I checked out of the hotel 48 hours ago. My bill was $330. At the time of check-out the pre-auth on my debit card was $430. Later, after I'd checked out, it went up to well over $500. Eventually, it "will sort itself out." If you don't use a credit card, just be sure you have the funds to wait for that extra $200 to sort itself out.
In summary: Excellent hotel, clean, immaculate, and with delightful, welcoming employees. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. Please check billing protocols.
*If and when you reply to this, you'll likely blame the bank. "You have to wait for a refund." Yep, you do. I know that. What I don't understand is why the pre-auth on the card increased after I checked out of your hotel; because the bank didn't levy those charges.
** And I mean all the praise I gave to your hotel. It's great. I will stay there again. Paying with my credit card, this time.
