I recently stayed at the Hampton Inn Clayton/Garner in NC for work and family reasons. My first visit was for scheduled for 13 nights, and I was to returned two weeks later for a 6-night stay.
Overall, the property itself is very clean, well-maintained, and secure. If constant cameras on the grounds makes you uncomfortable, this may not be the place for you, but I appreciated the sense of safety. The staff at the front desk was kind and welcoming, which made a big difference after my 10-hour drive.
This was not my first stay at this hotel, and in the past, I had no issues. I travel with my wife and two Pomski service dogs. They are medium-sized (about 30 pounds), well-trained, and are with me wherever I go. One reason I book Hilton properties is because most are pet-friendly. According to Hilton’s website, this hotel charges $75 for up to 4 nights and $125 for 5 or more nights. While higher than many other Hilton locations, I was willing to pay it for the convenience of traveling with my service dogs.
The problem came when I checked in and was handed an additional pet policy that was not disclosed anywhere on the Hilton reservation site. This was created by the hotel’s management, and I had no choice but to sign it. While most of the terms were reasonable, one clause caused major issues: the hotel requires that all pet rooms be cleaned daily, and you must either leave your pets out of the room or crate them from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to accommodate housekeeping.
For us, this was disruptive and intrusive. My wife works remotely and needs a quiet, private room during the day. Having to vacate or allow staff in during those hours defeated the purpose of booking a private space for work and online meetings. When I raised this with the front desk, I was politely informed that it was hotel policy, set by the property owner, with no exceptions.
Because of this, I ultimately cut my stay short, canceled a third future reservation I had made for September, and sought other accommodations that better fit our needs. To give some context, we were paying $146 per night plus tax for a King Suite Deluxe. That totaled $1,925.76, which the hotel charged in full to my credit card at check-in. When I checked out after only 5 nights, I then had to wait for the remaining balance to be credited back. I’ve stayed at many Hilton properties and am more accustomed to being charged at check-out for the actual stay, not billed in advance for the full reservation.
One additional note—the hotel, while clean, is an older property. It was built in 1988 and last renovated in 2018. For the room rate, I expected more updated furnishings, especially since many pieces still showed their age.(see photos of room 114)
To summarize:
The hotel itself is clean, safe, and staffed by friendly people.
Be prepared for higher-than-average Hilton pet fees.
Most importantly, be aware of the owner’s additional pet policy, especially the requirement that housekeeping must enter the room daily. Privacy can be difficult if you are traveling for work or need flexible use of your space.
Expect to be charged in full at check-in, not check-out.
While there are positives here, I left feeling frustrated and treated unfairly by policies that were not made clear before booking. I hope this review helps others who, like me, value both pet accommodations and privacy when traveling.
PS, I am not sure if the smoke detector worked, there was no lights showing on and it looked to be original equipment.
