(I'm sure there were more, but I didn't leave the hotel until 8:30, and I did not check the other areas of the parking lot.) I did not have anything in my rental car except for an ice scraper to tempt potential thieves. When I approached the front desk to speak with a staff member, I was summarily dismissed. When I asked whether there were any cameras, I was curtly told, "No." I expect better from a Hilton property in how it treats its guests when a crime is committed on its premises. Moreover, any hotel without cameras to monitor its parking area will not be on my list of future stays. The hotel's liability in this case is clear: 1) the hotel did not take reasonable measures to install cameras to protect hotel patrons' vehicles from vandalism (and possibly theft for some guests), 2) the hotel did not inform guests of the recent increase in car windows being smashed in the Durham area, including the area surrounding the hotel (a quick Google search netted numerous articles of incidents), 3) the hotel did not take actions to install cameras or have security guards intermittently patrol the parking area once said crimes were reported in the area in the months preceding my stay.
