First off, I called and James was very standoffish and short. Then at check in, James was rude and lacked customer service skills. Second, the floors were dirty, the counter wasn’t wiped off. Hair on TJ’s bathroom skink. Stain on the pillow. Housekeeping came and changed the pillow case and wiped the counter off. The lock on the door to our room didn’t work so we couldn’t lock the door. Overall not a good experience

This hotel will request your ID to check you are who you say you are, and then SCAN you ID without asking or permission. UNLESS you notice and STOP them from scanning. This is AFTER they check the ID to see who you are (reservation, CC, etc). And once you tell them not to scan your ID, the staff will tell you "It's fine, We'll cancel your reservation."
Violation of privacy, data retention, and just incredible inconvenience. I will NEVER check in to this hotel again.
Edited to add this additional thought after owner responded.
There are multitude of clean mid-range hotels abound who does not scan and threaten to cancel your reservation when you just arrived, I have many other options. I suspect you do too.
P.S. Entirely different case when ID is scanned at the airport. This hotel's policy is just darn lazy -- just in case something bad may happen, I'll violate everyone's privacy and threaten to cancel reservation last min at the desk if you do not comply. Oh boy.

Look, I’m a big believer that a hotel should feel like a warm hug from a giant teddy bear, and for the most part, this Tru hotel really stuck the landing. I spent three days and nights there, and honestly, the folks at the front desk were so friendly I halfway expected them to offer me a biscuit and a seat on the porch.
Here’s the breakdown:
The Highlights
The Lobby: This place was bright, clean, and had more seating options than a game of musical chairs. They’ve even got those lazy hanging chairs—which are basically hammocks for people who want to look professional—and a pool table. Plus, they had actual USA Today newspapers. Call me old-fashioned, but there’s something about the smell of ink in the morning that just beats a touchscreen, don't ya think?
The Facilities: The gym was "fit for a gaffer," stocked better than most. They had a big indoor pool too, though I didn't personally dip my toes in the water.
The Vibe: My room was a king-size beauty with a walk-in shower and a modern look that would make a designer weep with joy. Most importantly? It was quiet. Not a peep from the neighbors or the street.
The Half-Time Adjustments
Now, I’m not one to find fault in a sunset, but if we’re aiming for five stars, we’ve gotta talk about the "little things":
The Breakfast: It was... fine. Like a draw away from home. The pancakes had a bit of a "mystery flavor" to them, and the yogurt station had more candy toppings than a Willy Wonka fever dream. I ended up sticking to a trusty bagel and cream cheese with an orange for the road.
The Room Size: This is the kicker. The room was snugger than a pair of spandex leggings on a cold Tuesday. There was a bed, a bathroom, and about as much "extra space" as a packed elevator. The desk barely fit my laptop, and while the "hidden storage" for suitcases is clever, it feels a bit like playing a game of Tetris just to find your socks.
The Final Score: 4/5 Stars
If you're a business traveler who needs room to pace while you think, you might feel a bit like a sardine in a very stylish tin. But overall? I'd absolutely suit up for another stay here and I'd tell all my Hilton-loving pals to do the same. It’s got heart, and at the end of the day, that’s what wins championships.

I have always chosen Tru by Hilton Sterling Heights Detroit whenever I travel to Michigan, but my recent experience with Sam has made me seriously reconsider staying here again.
The issue started when I received an email informing me that my two-room booking had been cancelled because the hotel couldn’t reach me. At the time, I was on a 22-hour flight from the UAE to Michigan, which made it impossible to answer calls. Once I landed, I immediately contacted the hotel and asked to rebook the rooms. I fully understood that this would be at new rates, and I accepted the offer without argument, as I understand hotel policies.
What was completely unacceptable, however, was Sam’s attitude on the phone. He was extremely rude, dismissive, and unwilling to listen to my situation or needs. Instead of showing basic hospitality or professionalism, he spoke in a condescending way, demanding that I listen to him, with a very much “my way or the highway” attitude.
This is not the level of service I expect, especially as a loyal returning guest who stays at this hotel every time I visit Michigan. Hospitality is about respect, communication, and understanding not arrogance.
Management should seriously consider hiring and training staff with proper manners, customer service skills, and management qualities. Because of this experience, I will now be taking my business elsewhere.
Very disappointing.

New, but cheap. Continental breakfast was gross.
