Stayed in this hotel a little over a month ago for one night, in town for a friend's wedding. The room was fine, decent enough place to sleep for a night. Incredibly loud A/C unit that would blast for three minutes, then turn off for a few minutes, then blast again. But - that's just nitpicking. The one star review is due to being double charged for the room. I did pay with a debit card, which I've now learned was a mistake. I was charged the total of the stay twice. I called the front desk two times within the days following my visit, and was told by two different people that their end showed they only charged once. I was told the "night auditor" would call me to discuss further, which never happened. The second gentleman did get me an email address for the manager of the hotel, named Terri. I emailed Terri and explained the situation. She explained that the second charge was a "temporary hold" and would fall off the card within 10 business days. It was a bit shocking to see the total amount of the stay as a hold, but I took management for their word. After 10 business days, the double charge was still posted in my bank account. I emailed Terri again and asked for an update, and never received any kind of response. I filed a dispute with my bank, who decided in my favor, so I did receive my money back, but with no help from the Holiday Inn Express. All in all, the customer service support with this hotel was almost non-existent. I suggest using a credit card (I should have done this in the first place) and being extra vigilant regarding any charges the hotel tries to place on you.

Very solid. Great location, close and walkable to a Kroger, Sweetgreen and Starbucks and all the businesses downtown Birmingham. We were in town for a Lions games and it was about $30-40 to Uber downtown, depending on time of day. We stayed in top floor king room. Very clean and comfortable. Traffic noise is noticeable but not a dealbreaker. Staff very friendly, would stay again.

The building's AC units are inadequate. Stayed here for work when the outside temps were around 100*. The room never got below 80*. I would not choose to stay here again during warm weather. Breakfast was decent, the typical HIE buffet. There was a lovely lady cleaning rooms. I didn't catch her name but she was so kind!

Clean, but a bit dated. It's a smaller hotel with a tricky entrance off Woodward. But if you don't want to pay ridiculous prices to stay close to down town this is your best bet.
