As expected with Four Seasons properties, this hotel is absolutely beautiful. The infrastructure, design, and overall upkeep are excellent. Even with some areas currently under renovation, everything feels well maintained, spotless, and high quality. The rooms are impeccable — truly 10/10 — and the food throughout the property is very good.
That said, there were a few experiences during our stay that left a disappointing impression, especially considering this is a luxury five-star resort.
I stayed during the holiday season and arrived on January 1st. I assumed that after New Year’s Day the crowds would start to thin out slightly, but that was not the case. One morning, I went to breakfast around 7:30 a.m. because we had an early tour, and to my surprise, every single pool lounger was already “reserved” — not by people, but by random personal items like hairbrushes or small belongings left behind to hold spots. There was almost no one actually at the pool. Allowing this behavior felt inappropriate and poorly managed.
Another afternoon, I visited the adults-only pool and found the area noticeably dirty. There were used plates, cups
, and leftover items around multiple loungers, making it unclear which seats were occupied and which were available. Despite the low number of guests physically present, the space felt neglected, and service was extremely slow.
To make matters worse, my brother-in-law visited the adults pool on January 6th — well after the main holiday rush — and was told he needed to check in and join a waitlist just to access the area. He arrived at 10:00 a.m. and didn’t receive a message that space was available until 3:00 p.m., for a single person. That is honestly absurd. By that time, the pool is close to shutting down, as it closes at sunset.
This gave the strong impression that the hotel simply does not have enough pool and lounge capacity for the number of guests it accepts. Some loungers were also awkwardly placed — uncomfortable, with no view of the pool or ocean, facing other guests instead — which feels unacceptable given the price point.
Another strange experience happened when we were at the adults pool closer to sunset. Staff informed us that the area was closing and asked us to leave, even though I had ordered drinks and had not yet received the bill. When I asked about the check, I was told that “the bar had probably already closed it,” without any clarity. It felt rushed and disorganized.
Because of this sudden closure, my husband accidentally left his sunglasses on the lounger. When he tried to go back — literally within minutes — he was denied entry and told the area was already closed and that he would need to check with Lost & Found. We immediately contacted concierge, were told they would follow up, and were assured we would be notified.
We never were.
My husband had to repeatedly ask for updates over multiple days, and there was zero proactive follow-up from the hotel. The sunglasses were never found or returned. Given that they were left inside a controlled, staff-managed area and we were prevented from retrieving them ourselves, the lack of empathy, ownership, and assistance was extremely disappointing.
I’ve stayed at many Four Seasons properties around the world, and this specific handling of the situation felt like a letdown. It almost felt as though helping us was a favor rather than a responsibility — which is not the level of service one expects from a luxury brand.
Overall, the hotel itself is stunning, the rooms are excellent, and the food is very good. However, crowd management, pool access, cleanliness in shared areas, and guest service in problem-solving situations need serious improvement. For the price and the brand reputation, these shortcomings were disappointing.
This Four Seasons has undeniably luxurious rooms and a stunning pool setting. The food and service at Ferraro restaurant were also excellent and truly a highlight of our stay. However, this particular visit left us quite disappointed due to several serious service and room issues.
We arrived the adult pool around 8 a.m. and occupied two open front-row ocean-view loungers (without umbrellas), following the first-come first-served policy. We never left the pool but at around 10 a.m., a lady approached our loungers and she had a pool staff come ask us whether we would be willing to give up our seats and move elsewhere. The pool staff told us that the lady booked three cabanas in the back and she also wanted our front-row loungers. Again, these front-row loungers are first-come first-served and not reservable through cabana bookings, we found this request very strange and inappropriate especially from the pool staff. What was even more upsetting was the feeling that we were not being respected—were we approached because we are Asian and seemed “easy to deal with,” or because guests who spend money on cabanas are implicitly entitled to push other guests aside even in the common pool area? Either way, this interaction with the pool staff left us a very bad pool experience, we had to constantly monitor if our seats are taken by the other guest or the hotel staff when we were in the pool.
The room itself also had several maintenance issues. When we took a bath at night, we discovered that using the bathtub always causes dirty water and debris to back up from the shower floor drain, making the shower room unusable. Since it was very late and we only stayed one night, we reported this issue at checkout the next morning. We asked whether the bathroom issue had occurred previously and been concealed, and whether it was unique to our room or affected others as well. The front desk duty manager repeatedly responded with “I don’t know”, she said she needs to look into the maintenance history but unfortunately we received no follow-up at all.
After we checked out, the duty manager emailed us offering a $50 refund stating that “We hope this demonstrates our commitment to your satisfaction and encourages you to return for a much-improved experience in the future.”
This felt awkward and honestly insulting. No one is staying at the Four Seasons for a $50 credit. What we cared about was whether our problems and feedbacks were taken seriously and will be addressed properly.
Other small issues: We found a large live cockroach on our top-floor balcony when we had breakfast, which ruined our in-room dining breakfast. One of the floor lamps in our room was broken.
We had wonderful experiences from previous stays at all other FS Hawaii resorts. But this stay at Wailea did not meet the service standards we expect from Four Seasons, it left us genuinely disappointed.

We stayed at the Four Seasons Maui because it was the hotel featured in Season 1 of White Lotus and we were able to go on the White Lotus tour by Tracy. If you’re a fan, the tour is a must-do—it provides an insider look at filming during Covid, behind-the-scenes details, and shows where the main scenes were shot (top of the staircase, lobby bar, Ferraro for bar and restaurant scenes, the adult and fountain pools, and the left-side beach). Note: the tour may end by the end of the year due to HBO licensing.
Our four-night stay started a bit bumpy. Check-in at 2:45 pm had a 10-person line reminiscent of Las Vegas hotels, and our room wasn’t ready until about 4:15 pm. However, the hotel quickly smoothed things over: we received a credit for the delay, along with a bottle of champagne and a rose for our anniversary, which was a very thoughtful touch.
Room:
Room 620 had a large living area, open bedroom, and a balcony with a couch, chair, and table. The view overlooked a large grassy area, with the ocean and sunset in the distance. The bathroom had a double sink, bathtub, shower, and toilet in a separate room, and a lighted make-up mirror plus a six-drawer dresser that was very convenient for toiletries. Outside the bathroom was a bar area with a Nespresso coffee maker, tea kettle, and refrigerator. Four aluminum bottles of Four Seasons water were provided (refillable at hotel water stations), and the turn-down service included smaller bottles by the bed. Slippers were provided but only in Large and Small sizes, so they didn’t fit medium-sized feet. Robes were hung in the bathroom.
Pools & Beach:
There are three main pools:
1. Fountain/family pool with two hot tubs
2. Smaller Waterfall pool
3. Adult pool with swim-up bar, infinity edge, and hot tub
Cabanas are available for reservation—adult pool cabanas are $1,000, and reserving some chairs is $100. Lounge chairs open at 7:00 am, and we were able to secure chairs at 7:30 - 7:40 am. Otherwise, there’s a waitlist or beach option. The beach area is a good size with umbrellas available for free.
Activities & Cultural Events:
- Saturday/Sunday: Fire Knife Dancer at 6:30 pm
- Monday: Behind the Scenes of Hula (6:30–8:30 pm) with Hālau o Ka Hanu Lehua, one of Hawaii’s top hula groups
Daily participatory classes: Lei Making (9 am), Coconut Frond Weaving (11 am), and Hula (1 pm in the lobby)
Outrigger Canoe paddling (early reservation required). Other activities included yoga and pickleball.
Service & Special Touches:
The staff made our anniversary stay special: the manager from Duo visited us during breakfast, and Nick, our waiter at Ferraro’s, went above and beyond with happy anniversary wishes and a special dessert. The post-check-in champagne and rose were a lovely gesture.
Departure:
We had a late 11:00 pm flight, and the hotel accommodated us with late check-out and access to the Aloha Hospitality Suite, which included showers, lockers, and a lounge area with coffee, Nespresso, and TV.
Things I Loved:
- The White Lotus tour by Tracy. He has inside knowledge since he was onsite for the entire filming.
- "Behind the Scenes of Hula" on the pa. I loved it was authentic hula and not just made for tourist entertainment.
- The hula class by Candy, the instructor
- The Aloha hospitality suite for a shower and place to change before catching a plane
- The staff - everyone was genuinely helpful and gracious
- The free transportation to the Shops at Wailea
- The extra personal touches for our anniversary
- The insulated water pitcher at the Adult pool for cold water all day
Areas for improvement:
- More free chairs and umbrellas. It would be nice to have a leisurely breakfast and not worry whether you can get chair
- More staff for check-in
- More Outrigger Canoe openings
Overall, despite the initial check-in hiccup, the Four Seasons Maui delivered an exceptional stay with spacious, well-appointed rooms, attentive staff, beautiful pools, and immersive cultural experiences. Perfect for both White Lotus fans and anyone seeking a luxurious, relaxing Hawaiian escape.

My family and I had the most incredible stay at this hotel. The service was outstanding best hotel we've ever been to n on island as we've stayed at all the hotels on island and this cant be beat. Food & beverage amazing, got complimentary room upgrade, special birthday cake and treats were waiting in my room when we checked in. The pool servers gave me each day a complimentary glass of champagne, they also gave us tokens for the kids to get shave ice , ice cream for 2 days and special pool treats on the hour every hour forvall guests alomg with complimentary use of cabanas. The adult pool had a local singer playing the ukulele which was really nice and nightly entertainment in the lounge. They had a canoe outrigger that we went out on in the morning which was a wonderful experience. Staff was extremely friendly n welcoming. Duo and spago are excellent restaurants on property. Will definitely be returning in the future as this hotel made my birthday extra special n unforgettable experience

Hello,
I just wanted to provide some feedback to your location and share me and my fiancé's experience as our first time staying at the Four Seasons.
Firstly, the price transparency was a shock for us. The rate we paid, no where did we see an extra $55 dollars a day for parking anywhere in booking. If these had been included sooner, it would likely have affected our decision making for our stay. Doing a cost benefit analysis initially, we had a a picture in mind for the quality presented to us.
The quality for the price did not seem to match. We had gone outside of the hotel to other restaurants, such as Mama’s Fish House and Pilina and the price definitely aligned with the quality provided. We can’t say we would recommend a Four Seasons stay at this point. We also felt we were price gouged at every turn (attempting to charge more for a few extra flowers in my hair when getting it done for engagement pictures (luckily lovely Molly stuck up for me on this, to the coffee-$7 out of the reservoirs, parking, over $30 for one pineapple pancake) and honestly it made us feel stressed and led to a lack luster experience. The phrase that comes to mind with our experience is, just because you can charge more for something or price gouge, doesn’t mean you should.
When we go to Egypt, South America, even Africa soon as we love to travel, we at this time, will be looking at other hotels that match the quality for the price point.
We are just a little concerned at this point that there is more of a focus on the name with the Four Seasons than the quality received.
Furthermore, the adult pool was crowded and required a wait list if you got there after 10 am and with screaming kids at all other areas including breakfast, we felt like we were staying at a Motel 6 sometimes.
Another mention, our room was a “Mountain View” but below we had some parking deck and construction/ maintenance area that was half the view, and the spa was under renovation. Even a worker at the spa was shocked they didn’t offer any compensation or price reduction (I think they did for other guests) on my spa hair treatment due to renovations.
To end on a higher note, we did love Brandon (by umbrellas) Nikki, Gilina, John (car valet) and Molly (hair). These employees embody what you would expect to find at a luxury site. They were professional, patient, bubbly, personable, and went above and beyond.
I hope that they are valued and given raises or more as they deserve it.
Thank you for your consideration.
