After decades of only booking Premier Inns, this is the first time I have ever had to complain - twice in a two night stay.
I had flown in the previous day rising before 5am. Upon landing, I drove to my friends to attend a joint 75th Birthday party. I was late to bed and up early for Church the next day and a quick visit to family 85 miles away. By the time I eventually arrived at the hotel, I was completely exhausted (didn't help my being mid 70's.)
The hotel is conveniently located on Thorpe Bay sea front. Checked in, friendly and welcoming receptionist who was delighted to say my request for a ground floor room near to reception had been granted.
The room was lovely with a huge double bed. I unloaded my car and as it was already past 5pm, I crawled into bed.
A little over an hour later I was awakened by the bed shaking and the room vibrating with a rumbling noise. I was seriously wondering whether it was an earthquake.
I got dressed, very groggy, felt almost drunk (I don't drink alcohol) it was sheer exhaustion. As I passed the room next to me on the way to reception I noticed it sounded and vibrated just like my room. I told the receptionist what I had experienced and she looked confused at first then when I mentioned washing machine she said oh you are next to the washing room!
I was incredulous - why would you put a guest room next to a room creating such noise when you have a sleep guarantee? That's only overnight said she the washing will stop by 9pm.
And what about guests who have flown from abroad and need sleep before 9pm? We have to wash the sheets at sometime she said.
She did offer to move me to another room and to help me move because I had little energy left to do anything but clearly could not stay in the original room. I actually repacked and moved myself along the corridor and I was soundly asleep by 730pm. However, the next morning I discovered the USB charger was not working, the 'hole' was just that and the USB sat loose and could not be inserted. I told reception on the way out and she actually said most of the USB charging points in the rooms are not working and went on to complain about workmen leaving something switched off. Well I switched off at that point, making a mental note to try another place to stay next time, not a Premier Inn. I did stay for my second night without issues and slept well but had to get up at 330am for my return flight so could not make the most of my sleep.
I didn't expect this of Premier Inn whose sleep guarantee is famous and their mattresses legendary. Nor did I expect to find something so simple and cheap to fix as a USB point was seemingly ignored and deemed acceptable to be left broken.
Premier Inn, you are allowing standards to slip and it's not good - especially for long standing clients.
