I regularly stay at Premier Inn and Holiday Inn hotels for both business and leisure, and I have always found them to provide a good standard of service. Unfortunately, my recent stay at your hotel has been, by some distance, the poorest hotel experience I have had.
I checked in at approximately 5:00pm on 6th July. The gentleman who checked me in was polite enough, although he appeared disengaged and gave the impression that he did not particularly want to be there. Whilst I was waiting, I witnessed a young female member of staff checking in the guest behind me. I was genuinely surprised by how abrupt and discourteous she was. The gentleman she was serving was wearing a hearing aid and appeared to be struggling slightly, yet she showed very little patience or understanding. I was so uncomfortable witnessing the interaction that I found myself apologising to the gentleman in the lift afterwards and commenting that I couldn't believe how rudely he had been spoken to.
Later that evening, I returned to the restaurant for dinner and was served by the same member of staff. Her attitude was no more welcoming than it had been at reception. My meal was placed on the table with no interaction whatsoever, and she immediately walked away without asking whether I required any condiments or anything else. I subsequently had to call her back simply to request some mayonnaise, despite the restaurant being almost empty at the time.
Unfortunately, the food itself was equally disappointing. I ordered the burger, chips and coleslaw as part of the Meal Deal, and it was genuinely one of the poorest meals I have ever been served in a hotel. Once I had finished, I pushed my empty plate to the end of the table. Over the next ten minutes, both members of staff walked past my table on several occasions without clearing it or checking whether I needed anything further.
When I requested my included dessert, this was brought out, but again my empty dinner plate was left sitting on the table. After finishing the dessert, I had to stack the empty dishes myself. Whilst I appreciate this may seem like a small issue in isolation, it reflected the complete lack of attentiveness throughout the evening.
Breakfast the following morning was equally disappointing. Two members of staff appeared more interested in talking amongst themselves than monitoring the breakfast area. Several food items had not been replenished, and there were no eggs available at all until I specifically asked, after which I waited approximately ten minutes for them to be brought out.
The cereal and fruit selection looked dry and unappealing, there was no natural yoghurt available, no bananas, and many of the tables only had incomplete sets of cutlery.
What disappointed me most throughout my stay was the complete lack of customer service. Not once did I feel welcomed or valued as a guest. Even when I checked out, I made a point of thanking the gentleman on reception and saying goodbye. My first two attempts were ignored because he was wearing headphones, which I found particularly unprofessional for someone working on the front desk.
I appreciate that businesses are under pressure and that staffing levels can be challenging. However, it was clear that this hotel is operating with minimal staffing, and more importantly, staff who appear disengaged, unhappy and lacking even the most basic customer service skills. A smile, a greeting and a willingness to help cost nothing, yet they were noticeably absent throughout my stay.
I very rarely submit complaints, but I felt compelled to provide this feedback because the experience fell so far below the standards I have come to expect from your brand. Regrettably, I will not be staying at this hotel again, and I would struggle to recommend it to colleagues who regularly travel on business.
I hope this feedback is taken constructively and used to improve both the customer experience and the standards of service at this hotel.
