We travelled up to Edinburgh for the Tattoo and the festival. The hotel is located very close to the Market Street exit of Edinburgh Waverley train station, like all hotels in August the price was higher than normal but we were happy with both the location and service. We were greeted and checked in by Adam who was very friendly and displayed high level of professional attitude. We had booked the meal deal for dinner and breakfast but to unfortunate circumstances the dinner was not available but breakfast was highly recommended for good value. Saw Adam again on our check out day on breakfast he remembered our room number and was very helpful with assisting with our left luggage. Very easy to access the Royal Mile.
remier Inn Edinburgh (East Market Street) – Disappointing Value for Money
I rarely write negative reviews, but after spending more than £1,000 for a three-night stay, I feel compelled to share my experience. While the hotel's location is excellent, the overall guest experience fell far short of what I would expect in 2026, especially at this price point.
1. Extremely Poor Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi performance was frustratingly slow and unreliable throughout my stay. In an era where connectivity is considered a basic necessity rather than a luxury, offering poor internet service feels completely outdated. It's 2026. Fast, reliable Wi-Fi should be included free of charge and perform well enough to support remote work, video calls, streaming, and everyday browsing. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.
2. No Shampoo or Conditioner
I was genuinely surprised to find that the room did not provide separate shampoo or conditioner. Most hotels, even budget accommodations, now offer at least basic toiletries. The lack of these standard amenities felt unnecessarily cheap and inconvenient for guests.
3. Minimal Towels and No Washcloths
The room was stocked with only two bath towels and no washcloths. Again, this feels below the standard most travelers expect today. Such basic items should not require a special request or be omitted altogether.
4. No Staff at Reception
The hotel appears to rely heavily on electronic self-service check-in and automated processes. While technology can improve efficiency, there were virtually no staff available at the front desk when assistance was needed. Hospitality should still involve people. Guests paying premium rates should not feel as though they are checking themselves into a vending machine.
5. Poor Overall Value
The most disappointing aspect of this stay is the value proposition. Had this been a low-cost budget hotel, some of these shortcomings might be understandable. However, for a bill exceeding £1,000 for three nights, I expected a much higher standard of amenities, service, and comfort. Instead, the experience felt stripped down and overly automated while still carrying a premium price tag.
Bottom Line
Premier Inn's Edinburgh East Market Street location benefits from its convenient location, but the combination of poor Wi-Fi, missing basic toiletries, inadequate in-room amenities, and a lack of front desk staff left me disappointed. At over £1,000 for three nights, the experience simply did not deliver the level of comfort, convenience, or service that travelers should reasonably expect.
Rating: 2/5 stars
I would not choose this property again unless significant improvements are made to both guest amenities and customer service.

This was easily the worst Premier Inn I’ve stayed in. I’ve always considered the chain a safe, reliable choice, but this hotel fell well below the standard I’ve come to expect.
The room clearly hadn’t been cleaned properly. There was thick dust in all of the air vents, visible mould, and the furniture was in poor condition—the desk chair wobbled so much that it felt unsafe to sit on. Overall, the room felt neglected rather than simply dated.
The lack of housekeeping made matters even worse. We arrived to find there was no toilet paper in the room, and despite speaking to reception every day and requesting a service, our room was never cleaned, towels weren’t refreshed, and supplies weren’t replenished throughout our stay.
The advertised Wi-Fi was effectively unusable. We couldn’t get it working at all and ended up relying on the Costa next door for an internet connection, which isn’t what you’d expect when paying for a hotel stay.
Between the poor cleanliness, lack of housekeeping, broken Wi-Fi and general lack of maintenance, this hotel was a real disappointment. I wouldn’t stay here again and would recommend choosing one of the many better accommodation options in Edinburgh.
This property is very run down. Furniture in the lobby is cracked, sticky and uncleaned.
This hotel has very little staff. They spend there time policing the breakfast area. I was charged for $25 when I checked in on July 7th and was also billed again on my final invoice and again today July 17th when I checked out at 5am and breakfast starts at 6:30am. The breakfast is poor. Everything heated in an oven. Eggs in an oven are gross. I asked for scrambled eggs one day and the were microwave which is even worse.
The rooms are not cleaned unless you schedule the day before with front staff. The room was dirty. Carpets needed vacuuming and the bath room floor was black when I wiped it with a cleaning wipe. The tube /shower was moldy.
This property has been without a manager for 3 months. I was trying to call for two weeks before arriving i made 20 call, Expedia tried 8 times. No one ever answered. Nowseeing the property I understand why. There is no front desk. Two self serve kiosks and one computer with a wireless door bell for you to call someone from where ever they are hiding. The only phone is a cordless phone across the lobby in a corner. Now I know why it's never answered. As mentioned, no manager. This definitely shows in the staffs attitude and service level. The franchise should be looking into this. They have guest services/email and these people keep saying to call the hotel and ask for the manager. Hard to do with no Manager. Location to Royal Mile is only POSITIVE. I would like a real manager once hired to call me by telephone if it works. I want to be refunded for the two breakfast July 7th double paid and July 17th as I was gone before serving. I hope you find this review useful before you book this property.
