Unfortunately our stay at Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh (Picardy place)was extremely disappointing and nowhere near worth the price we paid.
The only real positive was the location, which is excellent, with plenty of restaurants and places to eat nearby. Unfortunately, everything else fell far below the standard I expect from a Holiday Inn.
Parking was a nightmare. There wasn’t even a designated area where guests could unload luggage. We repeatedly had to call reception to ask them to open the rear car park gate just so we could get our suitcases in and out. This was unnecessarily inconvenient, especially for families.
The customer service was equally disappointing. The staff were generally unhelpful, unfriendly, and came across as rude. There was rarely a smile, a greeting, or even a simple “thank you.” Every time we needed something as basic as toilet paper, we had to go downstairs ourselves. The toilet paper provided was poor quality and the smallest rolls imaginable.
We booked a family room, but it was unbelievably cramped. It was smaller than many standard double rooms I’ve stayed in. A sofa bed had simply been squeezed into the room, leaving almost no space to move around. A chair had been pushed into such a tight corner that it couldn’t even be pulled out properly. As someone with a knee problem, I needed the chair to sit comfortably, but it was practically inaccessible because of how cramped the room was.
Cleanliness was another major issue. The bed linen had visible stains, and when we asked for clean sheets, staff simply handed them to us and expected us to change the bedding ourselves. I found this completely unacceptable. Used tea and coffee sachets from previous guests had not been cleared away, the carpets had clearly not been vacuumed, and despite requesting room cleaning twice, very little appeared to have been done. Housekeeping standards were extremely poor, and management seriously needs to review the quality of cleaning being carried out.
Breakfast was another huge disappointment. The hash browns were cold, rubbery, and tasted as though they had been sitting around for days. Overall, the breakfast quality was very poor. To make matters worse, drinks such as juice and water were located downstairs, while the hot breakfast was served upstairs, meaning guests had to carry their drinks between floors. It was an inconvenient and poorly thought-out setup.
Overall, this hotel relies heavily on its excellent location, but that alone does not justify the high prices. The poor cleanliness, cramped rooms, lack of customer service, inconvenient parking, and disappointing breakfast made this one of the worst Holiday Inn Express experiences I’ve had. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it unless location is your only priority.
