  Had two separate one night stays and if could have fitted the bed in my bag I would have so big and comfy. Only wish slightly brighter light in the bedroom rather than various lamps. Had two evening meals and breakfasts which was nice just wish you had some local gins on offer in your bar

  We stayed here on Friday 9th October. I've marked service down only because of our breakfast experience. We had booked breakfast as well as the room. Unfortunately, when we went down to breakfast we were turned away, after we had stood about waiting for a staff member. We went to Reception where we were also told we didn’t have breakfast booked. We went back to the room to collect out bags, and my husband decided to check his booking again, and sure enough we had a booking for breakfast. Another trip to Reception and having checked our email the receptionist finally gave us some vouchers to take to the restaurant; where, of course, the same waitress ignored us again. She seemed more keen on attending and chatting to a couple who seemed to be known to her. It was sorted out in the end, but it did spoil the trip slightly and was highly embarrassing as the restaurant was full when we were refused breakfast. I did not see another person get turned away which made it even worse! Such a shame as the room was great, and convenient, as we were at a concert nearby. The female member of staff behind the bar on Friday night was lovely, really friendly and down to earth. So my tip is, if you have booked breakfast, double double check at Reception, when you check in; it will save you feeling like a criminal the next morning! 😄

  My wife and I spent a week at the Holiday Inn, Dumfries. We were very happy with the room, the restaurant service, and the very friendly and attentive staff. The grounds were very attractive. I was all set to award a five-star rating, until dinner on the last night. A large group of people, who were attending an event in a nearby building, came into the restaurant area for pre-event drinks. They were standing close to where we were having our meal, and talking very loudly, as well as occupying neighbouring tables. The ambience resembled a noisy, crowded railway station, and we found it impossible to converse between ourselves. I have had pleasanter experiences having pub meals in very unpretentious bars. Paying for a hotel meal, we expected much better. The hotel staff were very sympathetic to our predicament and (very kindly) did not charge us for our desserts. They couldn't have been more helpful. The problem here was the layout of the building, which is beyond the control of the on-site staff. To solve the problem would require action on a higher level, with senior management in the broader Holiday Inn organisation redesigning the layout. They do not seem to have addressed this issue. Action is needed to separate groups of non-diners from those having meals in the restaurant area.
