The neighbourhood of adaptation, inspiration and contemplation Perched on the River Exe, the historic centre of Exeter was once described as the Jewel of the West. In the heart of the city centre, Hotel Indigo Exeter has been lovingly restored and converted from its department store origins. This hotel was once the home of Colson’s, a department store opened in 1792 by local milliner Mrs. Colson, who became one of the cities most loved characters. From Colsons to Dingles, to House of Fraser, and now Hotel Indigo Exeter. Staying true to its roots the hotel takes its design inspiration from the building’s department store past and other notable neighbourhood sites as each of the 104 rooms are styled to honour elements of the city. With luxury amenities like Egyptian cotton linens, spa-inspired bathrooms, and 40-inch flatscreen TVs, this is the perfect place to explore the sights and sounds of the city.

We had a lovely stay here, the hotel itself looks very nice (former department store) but especially its location is absolutely unbeatable, just around the corner from the cathedral. Everything is within walking distance. The rooms are quiet and clean. We were there during a heatwave and the airconditioning kept our rooms nice and cool throughout our stay. Only small negatives I can think of are: - the room felt a bit cluttered, we had to move a chair and a lamp every time we wanted to access the wardrobe. - it wasn’t possible to open a window, which would’ve been nice during the cooler evenings. The hotel is easily accessible from the airport by taking bus 4A. Be aware when you’re going back that the bus stop on Sidwell St is request only, but the Cheeke St stop is also close by. The hotel itself has no parking. We didn’t book breakfast at the hotel since there’s so many excellent breakfast places nearby. Can really recommend On the Green, Bill’s, Zuki. For dinner definitely try Al-Farid, a really nice Moroccan restaurant just a few minutes away. We had dinner at the hotel (Dotties) once, which was nice enough but the portions were a bit on the small side. Also a bit lacking in atmosphere, mainly because there was hardly anyone else dining there. Then there’s the hotel’s roof terrace which has amazing views, but lots of people do complain about the long time you have to wait for your drinks. Not surprising, because there’s only one person working there, who really did his utmost best, but can only do so much. Last tip: make sure to go on one of the many red coat guided tours, most of them start from cathedral square and they are genuinely very interesting (and free!)

I'm extremely disappointed with our recent stay at Hotel Indigo in Exeter. I booked well in advance and clearly noted we'd be travelling with our 1-year-old daughter and would need a cot. On arrival, the cot mattress didn't fit the cot frame at all and had no sheets. We raised this at reception, and the duty manager's solution was to swap it for a folded-up mattress topper with a bedsheet on top, which was just as unsafe for a young baby to sleep on. When we explained this again, the manager said there was nothing more he could do and left it to us to sort it out, with no solution to a dangerous situation and consequentially a really uncomfortable stay. This isn't what I expect from an IHG property, especially as we had booked a suite and the safety concerns were obvious. It's left a real dent in what should've been an enjoyable trip to Exeter, and so I certainly would warn anyone with babies to not stay in this Hotel Indigo.

The hotel is nice but the staff is the worst I have ever had to deal with: unprofessional, rude and useless. We travelled from Spain and paid for a cot for our baby. When we got there, the cot didn’t have a mattress that fit properly and didn’t have any sheets on it. They took the cot and came back with a duvet rolled up as if it was a mattress and we were stupid to not see it wasn’t. That obviously was unsafe for a baby to sleep in. They didn’t even try to fix it and said there was nothing they could do, and were laughing and mocking us when we said that was not right and that it was unsafe for the baby. They were terrible and so disrespectful. Also, the sheets were not cleaned either. I would not recommend anyone to go to that hotel. It’s sad because it is pretty but definitely staff makes your stay horrible.

We stayed at Hotel Indigo for two days last week while visiting Exeter, and honestly, we really enjoyed our stay. The whole place has such a lovely atmosphere, and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Our room was really nice and comfortable, and the spa was great too. We also loved the breakfast. Every morning started with a really nice buffet, which was something we looked forward to. I especially want to mention Nusrat. Even though it was really busy, she was always so kind and made sure we got our lovely coffee. Overall, we had a really lovely experience. All the staff were kind and helpful, and they made our stay feel special. We would definitely come back again when we visit Exeter. Highly recommended!

Absolutely awful experience. I received a spa gift voucher back in January and, despite trying repeatedly, I still haven’t been able to book anything. The online booking system doesn’t work, nobody answers the spa phone, and even asking the hotel to get someone to call me back resulted in absolutely nothing. The hotel staff have been polite, but the spa itself may as well not exist. Calls are ignored, messages are ignored, and even when you walk in, there seems to be nobody there. The irony is that this was a gift meant to help me relax, but the process of trying to use it has been incredibly stressful. I’ve now requested a refund because I don’t see why they should profit from providing a service that customers cannot actually access.
