Having stayed in properties all over the globe, I know that a great hotel experience relies on a balance of excellent hospitality and basic physical comfort. Unfortunately, while the team at the Holiday Inn Bolton Centre excels at the former, the property itself severely lets guests down on the latter.
We travelled up from London for a wedding and needed a reliable, central base near to our wedding venue. On arrival, the reception staff were absolutely stellar—incredibly welcoming, easy to approach, and professional.
Visually, the room made a good first impression. It was a decent size, and both the bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean. However, our stay coincided with one of the hottest days in June, and the room felt like a sauna the minute we step foot through the door. Despite there being an official climate control panel and the noticeable vents on the wall, the air conditioning was non-existent. Traveling with a 3-year-old in that kind of heat is incredibly challenging, so I went to reception to flag it.
The staff informed me that management had actually made the decision to completely turn off and remove the building's AC functionality over a year and a half ago. To compensate, we were provided with two portable fans. Frankly, we would have been better off without them; they looked on their last legs and barely moved the air, making the night incredibly uncomfortable for our family.
It is a massive shame because the front-of-house team works so hard to deliver a great experience, but stripping out basic climate control in a modern hotel makes it incredibly difficult to recommend, especially during the summer months and is only something that is going to be more common due to our global climate.
