Do not book during a heatwave.
I booked this Premier Inn for a one night stay as a stop off before a long drive home the following day.
Check-in was poor from the start. I understood the wait as there were other guests ahead of us, but when we finally reached the desk there was no smile, welcome or basic courtesy. I was asked my name, told the amount to pay, handed a key card and told our room was “on this floor”. Apparently directions are now optional.
The room itself was extremely disappointing. I understand air conditioning isn’t advertised, but during a heatwave the room was unbearably hot. A fan was provided, which I initially appreciated, until I realised it was incredibly loud and covered in dust. So we had the choice of sweating in silence or sweating with the sound of a small aircraft taking off beside us.
The room was also poorly maintained, with peeling wallpaper, limescale around the toilet and sink, a kettle covered in limescale, wonky light fixtures (some missing bulbs) and rust on the towel rail. The corridors were in a similar condition, and I even saw another guest photographing the peeling wallpaper.
Things got worse that evening. Loud music from the adjoining pub made relaxing impossible, while people were sitting directly outside our ground floor window. We had no privacy and couldn’t close the window because the room was already unbearably hot. We tried the TV and fan to drown out the noise, with very little success.
I went to reception and politely asked if we could move to a room away from the pub. I was told the bar would close in “two hours” and that the hotel was fully booked. I left feeling that no real effort had been made to help.
The most unprofessional moment came as I walked away. While still within earshot holding a door open for another guest, I heard the receptionist tell her colleague, “That room isn’t even facing the bar.” Except it absolutely was. We had people sitting directly outside our window. Discussing my complaint like this before I’d even left reception was incredibly disrespectful.
After returning to our room, I checked the Premier Inn website myself and found rooms were still available. Even more frustrating.
And because apparently the night hadn’t provided quite enough entertainment, I then discovered a toenail on the bathroom floor. I genuinely left the shower feeling dirtier than when I got in.
We had noticed pillows and a duvet underneath the bed earlier in the evening. Later when I pulled the sheet back, I discovered the duvet hadn’t actually been put on the bed. There was only the sheet and duvet cover. I appreciate the room was already sweltering, but you’d think at least a lighter duvet might have been a consideration. Instead, I spent the night uncomfortable, hot and barely sleeping.
I don’t enjoy leaving negative reviews and would much rather give a hotel the opportunity to put things right. However, after waiting nearly a week for a response to my online complaint, I feel I’ve been left with little choice but to share my experience.
The combination of the unbearable heat, noise, lack of privacy, poor cleanliness, maintenance issues and the attitude of the reception team made this an incredibly uncomfortable night.
Photos attached showing some of the issues mentioned above.
I have also included how it stated online room availability.
