I reluctantly lowered this review from 5 star to 3 for a significant reason that was not handled properly. Which is unfortunate, because the rest of the trip was absolutely incredible.
The problem is, the most important part of a trip and being a guest at a hotel is the security of the guests, which was overlooked.
As a former police officer and current protector of my household for my family, I think MacArthur did a poor job of providing adequate security for their guests.
The grounds are open from the street and are accessible and have zero controlled access. You can literally walk in and rob each and every room without being noticed. I didn’t see a single security camera a when I confirmed with staff, that was ignored in the response.
There should be controlled access in the evenings to protect the guests.
As I do every night before I go to bed, I go around and check doors and windows to ensure they’re locked. I close blinds and curtains, and when at hotels will check for exact security measures to secure doors as most have. This hotel did not and had french doors leading to the secluded patio, which was nice but allows a hidden view for an intruder.
We woke up Saturday morning to an open patio door on the French doors. The dead bolt was engaged and the door was open about 6 inches. The door frame was cracked and showed clear signs of forced entry. (We did not leave the door open and the deadbolt engaged, I vividly remember locking the doors, closing blinds, curtains and making sure everything was secure.
I sent pictures and information to the staff of what I woke up to and was told it looked fine and not to worry. It took several hours from someone to respond and ZERO follow-up was done. We were not offered to move rooms, just an apology text message and not a response to the security issue until I asked for a follow up hours later.
Someone forced entry into our back door. Maybe they heard or saw people were in there and decided to leave? I don’t know, but I know I don’t leave it open with the deadbolt engaged. I know what a damaged door frame looks like..
This was not handled properly and the security of their guests is clearly not a priority. Very frustrating and especially the way it was handled with the staff.
I expected better. French doors are generally unsafe, but proper security measures were not taken, which led to someone making entry inside while we were sleeping.
Frustrated and upset don’t begin to explain how I feel, not to mention I didn’t sleep Saturday night worried someone would try again.
Had a wonderful experience up until that point, but ruined by simple safety measures that should have taken place.
Gates at entry points near the street are a necessity to protect guests. Add cameras, add gates, protect your guests!!!
And when they report a crime, take it serious!

Frequently Asked Questions About MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa
How far are you from the center of town? Can we walk there?
We are a hop, skip and a jump from the center of town, known as Sonoma Plaza, or “The Square.” In more concrete terms, we are a ten minute walk, a 5 minute bicycle ride (less if you use one of our electric bikes!) and a 3 minute drive. Our property sits at the edge of a beautiful residential neighborhood with Victorian, mid-century, craftsman and modern homes and stately trees, so the walk or bike ride to the center of town is peaceful, beautiful and safe.
Are there wineries close to you?
Sonoma Plaza, a ten minute walk from MacArthur Place, is home to more than 30 tasting rooms, most of which are open to the public and welcome walk-ins. And within a short 8-12 minute drive, you can access over two dozen additional wineries amidst the vineyards and foothills. We are also a 20-minute drive from Napa, with its own impressive array of wineries.
Do you offer an airport transfer service, or a shuttle to Sonoma Square?
We do not offer a standard, regularly-scheduled transport service. We work with each guest personally to customize transportation to their preferences. Whether you fancy a shuttle bus, town car, rideshare, limousine, refurbished vintage Land Rover…or an electric bicycle, our concierge team would be happy to help you plan the perfect mode of transport for your journey.
Is it easy to get Uber and Lyft?
Uber and Lyft are available in Sonoma, although wait times can range dramatically depending on the time of year, day of the week or time of day. Summer weekends, holidays and big event nights (such as the Tuesday Night Farmers Market in May thru October), for instance, usually require a significant wait. If you are planning a day of wine tasting at various vineyards, we recommend hiring a driver or booking a tour for a more seamless experience. For airport transportation, we recommend allowing extra time in case wait times are lengthy. Alternatively, we would be happy to arrange a driver or shuttle service for you.
Do you have a restaurant on property?
Our newly-reimagined property has three culinary outlets, Layla, The Bar at MacArthur, & The Porch. Layla is a contemporary and elevated Mediterranean restaurant serving breakfast & lunch daily and dinner Wednesday – Sunday. The Bar at MacArthur is a warm and inviting bar-lounge that serves a curated selection of cocktails, beers and an easy all-day menu, and The Porch is a communal coffee shop, stock house, and marketplace.
Are there any vegetarian or vegan options on the menu?
Layla offers an array of fresh and seasonal dishes featuring fresh and local produce in Sonoma. We have several vegetarian and vegan options. Many dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan upon request.
Is there a corkage fee at Layla?
Yes, the corkage fee is $35 per bottle and is waived with the purchase of 1 bottle (750ml or magnum) on the list.
Do you offer in-room dining? What are the hours?
Yes, we have a seasonal in-room dining menu featuring highlights from the Layla and Bar menus. In-room dining is offered from 7:30am until 9pm. Breakfast is served 7:30-10:30am, after which guests can order from our All Day menu. The menu is available on our website, or you can call the front desk for assistance.

We have a treasure trove of great dining and drinking establishments within minutes of MacArthur Place. We have curated a round-up of the very best for every mood and palate. Click here for our Eat & Drink | Best Sonoma Restaurants blog: https://www.macarthurplace.com/journal/bests/
Is The Spa at MacArthur open only to hotel guests?

Do you offer any fitness classes or passes?
Each Saturday and Sunday morning from 9-10am we offer an invigorating yoga session led by one of our talented local instructors – Jes Williams & Andrea Bogart. This all-levels vinyasa class weaves together a mindful flow linking breath to challenging poses, with an emphasis on alignment, strength, balance and just letting go. This yoga class is held indoors in the colder months in one of our cozy Coach House event salons or on our Burris House lawn during the late Spring through early Fall. This class is complimentary for hotel guests, and a mat will be provided. The class is $10 for Sonoma locals.
