I reluctantly lowered this review from 5 star to 3 for a significant reason that was not handled properly. Which is unfortunate, because the rest of the trip was absolutely incredible. The problem is, the most important part of a trip and being a guest at a hotel is the security of the guests, which was overlooked. As a former police officer and current protector of my household for my family, I think MacArthur did a poor job of providing adequate security for their guests. The grounds are open from the street and are accessible and have zero controlled access. You can literally walk in and rob each and every room without being noticed. I didn’t see a single security camera a when I confirmed with staff, that was ignored in the response. There should be controlled access in the evenings to protect the guests. As I do every night before I go to bed, I go around and check doors and windows to ensure they’re locked. I close blinds and curtains, and when at hotels will check for exact security measures to secure doors as most have. This hotel did not and had french doors leading to the secluded patio, which was nice but allows a hidden view for an intruder. We woke up Saturday morning to an open patio door on the French doors. The dead bolt was engaged and the door was open about 6 inches. The door frame was cracked and showed clear signs of forced entry. (We did not leave the door open and the deadbolt engaged, I vividly remember locking the doors, closing blinds, curtains and making sure everything was secure. I sent pictures and information to the staff of what I woke up to and was told it looked fine and not to worry. It took several hours from someone to respond and ZERO follow-up was done. We were not offered to move rooms, just an apology text message and not a response to the security issue until I asked for a follow up hours later. Someone forced entry into our back door. Maybe they heard or saw people were in there and decided to leave? I don’t know, but I know I don’t leave it open with the deadbolt engaged. I know what a damaged door frame looks like.. This was not handled properly and the security of their guests is clearly not a priority. Very frustrating and especially the way it was handled with the staff. I expected better. French doors are generally unsafe, but proper security measures were not taken, which led to someone making entry inside while we were sleeping. Frustrated and upset don’t begin to explain how I feel, not to mention I didn’t sleep Saturday night worried someone would try again. Had a wonderful experience up until that point, but ruined by simple safety measures that should have taken place. Gates at entry points near the street are a necessity to protect guests. Add cameras, add gates, protect your guests!!! And when they report a crime, take it serious!

This is a very nice choice for lodging in Sonoma. Charming and lots of comfort features. Only minutes front downtown Sonoma. 20 minutes from Napa.

We returned to MacArthur Place to celebrate our anniversary, since it’s where we stayed during our wedding weekend, and unfortunately the experience was disappointing. Before arriving, I emailed in advance to request early check-in if possible and mentioned we were celebrating a special occasion. At check-in, the front desk staff was curt and unwelcoming — they simply asked my name, said the room wasn’t ready, and offered nothing further. For a property of this caliber, I expected more courtesy. Calling ahead was also frustrating. Every time I phoned, I was routed to reservations (who couldn’t transfer me), which meant I had to hang up and call repeatedly until the front desk finally answered. The day of check-in coincided with a wedding, which made navigating the property with a baby and dog difficult. On top of that, the wedding catering was set up right outside our suite, and cleanup went late into the night. It was noisy and certainly not the peaceful experience we hoped for. Though this is not their fault. Most disappointing: despite paying over $1,500 for one of their top suites (booked through Chase with benefits), there was nothing to make the stay feel special — no note, no amenity, not even a simple acknowledgment of our anniversary. For a hotel that positions itself as luxury, that lack of attention really stood out. Adding to this, the hotel advertises a text service for convenience. I texted ahead to place a room service order so I could time it around feeding my baby — but never received a response. Clearly the message went through, because the following day they texted me asking for my credit card information (since I had booked with Chase and they didn’t have one on file, another mess up). This lack of coordination and training defeats the purpose of the service and added unnecessary stress. To make matters worse, at checkout we were incorrectly charged for breakfast that was supposed to be included. When I questioned it, the staff gave me attitude, even suggesting we had two breakfasts when we only stayed one night. Only after I pushed for a detailed bill did they figure out their error. There wasn’t even a basic “How was your stay?” as we checked out. I’ve stayed at other properties in Sonoma and Napa that deliver much warmer, more thoughtful service at this price point. Sadly, MacArthur Place just isn’t at that level. If you want to charge luxury prices, you need to provide a true luxury experience. We won’t be returning, which sucks because I always tell my friends how lowly of a hotel it is, but there is no way I can recommend it anymore.
