I am giving this four stars. Staying at the Mark Hopkins hotel has been a bucket list thing for twenty five years. I had a date at The Top of the Mark when I first moved to the bat area. I am approaching 60, so I am slowly checking these items off the list. Most of the four stars belong to some stellar employees such as Ric, the concierge. Wow, what a great human who goes above and beyond. This building is old but incredibly charming. I love old architecture and windows. I deducted a star but should have deducted more for the investment group who own this hotel. Interesting that they dishonestly still use the Intercontinental name. This group does nothing but their cash cow and decrease amenities for their high end clients. They’ve locked the minibars and let all the ice machines break to the point where there’s only one left on the fifth floor. They don’t give customers Byredo toiletries, as they are now attached to the wall. Cheapskates. Thank goodness for their restaurants because I don’t see them succeeding in running this hotel long term. Their philosophy on business is backwards. The room service was excellent. The view beautiful, hiowever, the room windows were incredibly dirty. The toliet has old and strange plumbing in which the toilets open to the sewer or gross septic tank below. So the smell comes right back up the toilet when flushing. The room wasn’t too dirty but as others mentioned, it could use an update or two. I did appreciate the art in the hotel. Thank goodness they haven’t removed it, yet. The mattress also needs to be replaced as there are permanent body divets in the existing mattress. You’ve been warned. If charm is what you’re after, you may enjoy but don’t expect any amenities or modern luxury.

Unfortunately I have to give this one star due to the lack of tea and coffee facilities in the room, and the locked fridge preventing you from even keeping your own drinks in the room. For a hotel with these prices this was very poor. They do have a warning on their website but it is easily missed when booking, and no discount is available for the lack of basic facilities. Overall the hotel felt tired and in need of a renovation. We also stayed at the Fairmont during our stay in SFO and for the same prices that was a much better experience.

It is meant to be a luxury hotel, and in its day it probably may have been. Tired, no fridge, no mini bar, no tea and coffee making facilities, the worst toilet paper very cheap, basically nothing and for the price they charge. Reception staff were very unfriendly, the first thing said to us was would I like to pay extra for an upgrade !!! .. the only two staff that were a credit to the hotel was John in the cafe and a young man at concierge. The location is at the top of Nob Hill, not ideal to go anywhere you needed to either taxi, cable car, or walk down and up the steep streets, cable car cost $9 one way so makes an expensive way to get around. Would suggest staying down town union square. This hotel was booked by a travel agent wish we had booked a hotel ourselves.

Years ago my girlfriends and my first couples vacation was to the wonderful city of San Francisco, the Mark Hopkins is were we laid down temporary roots. The hotel has obviously seen some age and has done so like fine wine. A must if you stay here is too have a atleast one evening at the top of the mark. Delicious, well concocted drinks with a view that is damn near second to none. As for the location you are a leisurely stroll from union Square and hustle of of downtown. Wholeheartedly recommend this fine old hotel, that still holds up to snuff on all accounts.

Wow…Terrible. We always stayed at the other IHG Intercontinental on Howard St and loved it but this Mark Hopkins location is horrible. It is a “historical” site which is nice from the outside but the rooms are incredible dated. Paint peeling, low water pressure, dingy old decorate, an excuse for not renovating for the sake of being “historical.” Lots of street noise at night. They will nickel and dime you for everything. No water, one welcome drink despite always getting two for two guests at the other Intercontinental location. They charged us $17 for two cans of Coca Cola. Will NEVER stay here again and neither should you. It is also located at the top of a very steep hill so if you are a tourist, it will be a pain to walk to other locations. Good workout though. Stay at the other IHG Intercontinental location on Howard St. They do have an okay bar at the roof but still would not stay here again.
