Great old building however the execution of the remodeled rooms is a bit rough.
Lobby is stunningly beautiful.
Staff are delightful.
Rooms are small and bathrooms are shoe-horned together. You can’t stand in front of the bathroom sink because it’s so small. On the up side - walk in, tiled shower appropriate for the room decor.
Location is abysmal. You’ll be OK if you walk straight down Stockton to Union Square. Otherwise, in any other direction, you hit the Tenderloin and all of its colorful inhabitants. At one point I felt unsafe walking down Taylor toward Market. Of course, conditions change on a moment to moment basis in any city, but, in general, you’d be wise to avoid the area.
For the money, at the time of my booking, I should have stayed up the hill at the Mark Hopkins, another IHG property, for the same price. If you are looking for the Old World Charm, check out that hotel. IMHO, Holiday Inn Express at Union Square would be a safer option. It’s not a classic building, but it literally is on Union Square and you can get a suite with a real bedroom for about the same price.

There wasn’t even a refrigerator, even though the website stated that one was included. The TVs didn’t work, they didn’t provide the Wi-Fi password, there is no parking, and the most they offer is to pay $50 for a nearby parking lot. This is not what I expected when I booked a luxury room
Really Nice Jobs on the rooms, Service is great, front desk were very friendly, however when guest calls day before trip, please help them out, and very clear about all charges and car parking, information was incorrectly given, and higher charges occurred.
Urge others to avoid this hotel. Horrible experience at checkout - despite being fully prepaid on trip.com for booking, including destination fee $30 + tax, front desk clerk insisted on charging me destination fee second time without my consent, telling me I could take it up with my card's bank if I disagreed.
I then discovered hotel had charged my card an additional $148.10 immediately after - although again, my booking had been fully prepaid and they had acknowledged this at check-in day before.
I called hotel and was told they could not help, to contact my bank. With no reply to emails sent them, I texted their team (had been connected with them during stay), and was actually blocked by them (text identified "Jay") when I asked for help.
Trip.com contacted hotel on my behalf and could also not resolve this. Following this intervention, hotel sent a brief text claiming all would be corrected within a few days, but would not reply further even as I asked for details or some confirmation.
No other way to contact hotel now - and still not resolved.
Obviously my experience was horrible and trying to address overcharges has taken up a lot of time - their lack of response and lack of professionalism is suprising and of course unacceptable.
It will not be a surprise that I strongly recommend others avoid this hotel - rooms are pretty basic for 4 star (room 1718 was small, with dirty windows obstructing any view); however, front desk and hotel management are impossible to deal with and dismissive.
I urge others to consider other options in SF, and avoid this hotel.

This was one of the worst hotel experiences my partner and I have ever had — not because of the room, but because of the hotel’s extremely incompetent and careless billing process.
My partner booked Hotel Spero through Trip.com, and the reservation was fully prepaid, including the resort fee. This was clearly stated in the booking confirmation. Despite this, after we checked out, the hotel still charged my partner’s credit card for the resort fee, even after we explained multiple times that everything had already been paid.
What makes this even worse is that the staff didn’t bother to properly check their system. Instead of resolving the issue, they went ahead and charged the card anyway — and then somehow charged AGAIN for the entire stay. Yes, my partner was double charged for a fully prepaid reservation.
When we asked for a refund, the response was basically, “Contact your bank, we can’t do anything.” This is absolutely unacceptable. This was their mistake, yet they refused to take responsibility or make any effort to fix it.
After we noticed the charges on the credit card, we tried to contact the hotel directly to resolve the issue. Instead of acknowledging their mistake or helping us, they completely ignored us and blocked our attempts to contact them. That behavior is beyond unprofessional and feels like they were actively avoiding accountability.
Now my partner is stuck disputing charges with the bank because the hotel staff was either too lazy or too careless to do their job properly.
If you’re thinking of staying here, be extremely careful. Check your credit card statements closely, because you might end up paying twice for your stay like we did. We will never stay here again and do not recommend this hotel to anyone!!!!!
