Adorable Deplorable

I was attending a classical guitar concert at the Herbst Theatre on Van Ness, so I was looking for a hotel nearby. There were only a few, and most had poor reviews. I found this Holiday Inn on Van Ness and California St., a few blocks north of the theater, and saw it also has a Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s within walking distance. I booked a “King Premium Corner View” room at the Senior Discount price, and I’m an IHG Rewards member. When I got here, I was blown away at how nice everything turned out to be, exceeding my very picky expectations! First of all, at my request because I have a lot of meds and have leftovers from meals, and I like to buy and store Pellegrino and fresh-squeezed orange juice, so they gave me TWO mini-fridges. And they said they had an extra microwave, which they also gave me! The engineer arrived to my room to install them promptly, just minutes after I checked in (and placed them where I requested), as well as another engineer who switched out a house phone that wasn’t working properly. And the extra hangers I had requested were already in my closet when I checked in. What blew me away was the view, which is not really advertised well on the hotel’s website, in my opinion. There are windows from nearly floor to ceiling all along on two sides, facing north and east. So I could see sailboats on SF Bay and mountains from one, and Nob Hill, cable cars on California St., downtown (including the TransAmerica tower and B of A building), and another part of the bay out of the other windows. Views both day and night were spectacular! And despite what I read in reviews, my room was COMPLETELY QUIET: no noise or disturbances from other rooms, the elevator, or in the hall and no outside noise, except for an occasional emergency vehicle siren. And they should re-name the hotel the “Holiday Inn Nob Hill,” because that’s where it’s located, even though the prices are reasonable. Also I felt no danger and saw no homeless or thugs as I walked around alone, even at night. The room looked like it had been updated recently: not dated and new furnishings, including a nice long desk along the windows, so I had a view while I worked. Free WiFi worked well. It was spotlessly clean, and they even honored my request for housekeeping to come at a certain time, to my convenience. I liked that the bathroom had a shelf above the sink that extended all along the wall to the shower, which held lots of cosmetics and toiletries. And the hot water was plentiful and arrived quickly. Also contrary to reviews, there was a thermostat that controlled both heat and a/c, and I switched it to both, as it was cool at night, and the compressor was efficient and not noisy. They have a breakfast buffet, but it’s a more elaborate one than at most other Holiday Inns, so there’s a fee. But you can purchase items from the buffet a la carte, as well. And there’s a coffee and pastries a la carte place in the lobby.

I stayed here for one night, and unfortunately the experience wasn’t great. Parking is around $50 overnight, and while I understand availability in the area is limited, it still feels like a lot for what you get. The parking structure also had a strong urine smell. I get that some of that may be out of the hotel’s control, but I do wish there were measures in place to help guests feel more comfortable considering the price we’re paying for both the room and parking.
The room itself didn’t feel worth the rate or the location. Yes, it’s within a few miles of some attractions, but next time I’d rather stay farther from downtown and just make the drive. The staff also didn’t feel very welcoming, and the sandwiches I bought downstairs were pretty disappointing—the bread was extremely hard.
Overall, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again.
