We bought a package deal from Southwest Airlines so we did not receive any Hilton Honors points. We bought the package because we were there on a family matter and really thought we weren't going to spend a lot of time in the room; we were more concerned about the price of the trip than the quality of the accommodations. We did not read any reviews nor research the Doubletree in any way before our stay. We chose this hotel based on price and location.
We rolled up around 3pm and the first thing you notice is a letter-sized piece of paper with 12-point font sitting on the check-in desk in a plastic stand-up holder stating their policy for "Parties in Room". It begins with their policy is "no parties", and goes on to state how many complaints to the front desk from upset guests would be tolerated before the San Diego police are called and ending in a $250 "nuisance fee" that will be imposed on the offending guests as well as prosecution for any damage to room and/or furniture, if applicable.
We were very concerned.
While we wait an hour to check in, we check out the hotel reviews on the interweb as we have nothing better to do. There, in living color, we see pictures of awfully soiled rooms, dirty towels, and generally yucky conditions. On the interweb review sites, we read that this hotel has loud parties, bad odors, and soiled everything. We discuss changing hotels, but we have already paid for this one.
With no choice, we check in. You know how Doubletree brags about the warm, chocolate chip cookies you will receive at check-in? Yah, no cookies. We had to return to the front desk to ask for our cookies, which we received, but they were not warm.
We stayed on the second floor, which could be accessed by a spiral staircase. Great for exercise! The common hallways were very dingy and there was a strong antiseptic odor. Our room was across from the elevator, but we were not bothered by any noise.
Our room was in dire need of updating. The rug had spots, the furniture was very dated, and the whole room needed painting. The toilet tank was extremely dirty, which we had to look at because the toilet wouldn't flush properly, probably because it needed to be replaced. The top of the television picture was extremely dark and was not very watchable. The vanity was made of dark wood with metal feet; the metal feet were starting to pit and rust. There was a very faint scent of cigarettes, but we opened the sliding glass doors (pool facing) and it pretty much dissipated.
The next morning, we dined at the hotel restaurant. It was very good! Accommodations were accommodated (one scrambled egg and one egg "up") the coffee was decent, and the food was ok (ordered off the menu). The waitress was everything you would want a waitress to be! Again, the decor was dated, and for this reviewer, there were no hash browns (my preference), but we got enough roasted potatoes to feed a small country, and they were not bad!
The best thing about this hotel was the lobby bathrooms. They are recently remodeled, clean and seemed to be maintained well.
Even though we were technically not receiving Hilton Honors points, the front desk gal gave us late check-out (1pm). Check out was okay, but I had to remind the check-out girl that she did not charge us for many items. I twice had to remind her we owed her more money than she showed us on the bill.
Frankly, we were surprised Hilton would put their name on this hotel: It was not up to the standards of any Hilton we had stayed at previously. However, there was no noise from parties, and because we were there on family business, really did not spend enough time in the room get too bothered about anything. If you are looking for a budget hotel to lay your head and you are not in "party season", (Prom, Graduation, Holiday, etc), you may be okay.
