I am going to optimistically hope that some of these were not the usual happenings and that it was bad timing for our visit.
- When we arrived, four girls were working at the desk. No one acknowledged us and they weren’t busy helping someone else in front of us. We went to the rooftop bar and were also ignored.
- The hotel has nice interior design, furniture and finishes. The building or renovation even has a LEED Silver plaque in the elevator.
Most of this is either our bad timing in visiting the hotel but also basic and regular maintenance items.
- The men’s steam shower was down for maintenance.
- The filtered water and ice machine on our floor did not produce ice.
- The bathroom had water damage on the ceiling and peeling wall paper.
- The fridge cabinet door was about to fall off the hinges.
- The walls between rooms are thin or not insulated well. You can hear your neighbor.
- We were on the 7th floor and could hear the street noise very well.
Were are Hilton brand loyal but there are plenty of Hilton properties near by to choose from. I would take my chances at the Best Western next to the Carte than stay here again.

I called the hotel inquiring for two rooms and questions I had. Brianna answered the phone and she was super helpful and very kind. Overall very patient. I was very pleased with the service I received. It was a no brainer after that to book the rooms. Thank you again for your kind service Brianna!

A great experience with Hilton’s Carte Hotel. Our room was big and clean, with an oversized bathroom. The bathroom was actually big enough to be useful for a group of 3-4 guests in a room. The floor to ceiling windows had beautiful views day and night. The complementary water was in a reusable metal bottle which we appreciated. All hotel and restaurant staff were friendly and helpful. The front desk staff member gave a long introductory spiel and was patient enough to recite it a few hours later when I forgot some key details. The incidental hold is big ($150 per night), but maybe former guests were on bad behavior? The fitness center is a real gym! I wandered in expecting the “hotel special” of 2 cardio machines and a dumbbell rack, but this fitness center has every cardio machines you can imagine, plenty of weight-lifting areas, and even a sauna. There was also a refrigerated wall of pre/post workout foods, supplements, and snacks. If you are dedicated to your physical fitness, this place is like a candy store. Back to to hotel- the saltwater pool and cabanas were cute but it was SoCal cold (60 degrees) and no one was in the pool. The jacuzzi was a pretty, roiling soup. The rooftop bar had picturesque views but there were a few different discordant things happening: music, giant tv, loud conversations in front of the heat lamps and the middle of the walkway. The only downside to the stay was our neighbor in the adjacent room insisted on speakerphone calls in the bathroom which could be heard clearly.
If you have a few days in San Diego to explore the city, this is a great choice if you like walking/ride share. It’s a 10 minute walk to the Santa Fe Amtrak station, making this a superb choice for folks visiting from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara.

As we waited for the uber at 4 in the morning security car for the hotel decided to block the only spot for the uber to park. Security guards saw us, two women struggling with heavy card filled with 5 huge military bags (moving to Alaska following the orders), we asked them to please move the car as we couldn’t take the card across the street, but they chose to joke around with front desk lady - and she wasn’t helpful either. Normally we wouldn’t have a problem running across the street but with that card it was impossible. Why they chose to park at 4 am at the only spot available and proceeded to stand and joke around when they saw that the situation they created distressed customers I will never understand. They also lied to our faces promising to move the car “in a minute” when you could see that they never intended to do so. In the end, Uber driver had to park illegally in the dark intersection, which we were grateful for under the circumstances, but it put in danger him and us. As he helped to load our bags in, security guards walked nonchalantly out of the hotel, got in the car and left. I was never this disappointed in the hotel before.
