It's been months since our stay, but despite the passage of time my child keeps mentioning it. Given that our experience left such a lasting impression, I'm finally coming back around to writing this. On the one hand, for anything unpleasant it's always possible to imagine something worse, but when it comes down to it, our stay was genuinely the worst we've ever had in any hotel.
First, we were there during a major renovation which, from other more recent reviews, may now be complete. It was unpleasant to check in through a window under a portable tent in the dark, and breakfast was served as takeout only, from a converted guest room with nowhere to sit. Unrelated to the renovation, access to the motel was through a gas station parking lot, which was difficult to enter during heavier daytime traffic. And the ice machine was broken.
Getting past these lesser issues to the real problem, the guest rooms themselves were in terrible condition. The carpet was ancient and badly stained, and there were awful stains in the shower which I genuinely thought might be dried blood at first but later concluded were rust. We also spotted (and managed to kill) a roach, and my child spent the rest of the trip and some time afterward worrying about the possibility of roaches sneaking into our luggage, hitching a ride home with us, and infesting our house.
It was interesting to see another review mention a major mechanical failure with their door latch and locking mechanism, because we had a very similar problem. Our door simply wouldn't stay closed all the way; after pushing it firmly against the frame, it would swing back open about an inch. This was due to a missing strike plate, which allowed the door bolt to move freely back and forth in the hole in the door frame where the strike plate should have been. I honestly wasn't sure a modest push from outside wouldn't pop the door free, so although it was getting late we decided to request a different room. To their credit, they did move us promptly.
But the next day it became clear they'd somehow failed to record our move. At 11:30 p.m. our phone started ringing. Since there was no reason anybody would be calling us there, I initially tried to ignore it. But the caller kept calling, and finally I tried to pick up, only to discover I couldn't because the phone itself was broken. Eventually I discovered the switch under the handset was faulty and, by pulling it up with my fingers, was able to answer. The caller simply said, "Who is this?" Needless to say, I had the same question for them! It turned out to be the front desk trying to figure out why housekeeping had reported people being in our room. They had apparently failed to record having moved us there. Though we got that late night confusion sorted out, it left me aware that during that time there had probably been nothing to prevent them from checking someone else into that room. The idea of a complete stranger gaining access to our luggage while we were out during the day, or possibly walking in on us in the middle of the night, makes my skin absolutely crawl.
And finally, after checking out I realized they'd overbilled us by about 10%. It was hard to get in touch with them, when for several hours they weren't answering their phone, but we did eventually get it corrected.
In summary, yes, it could have been worse. But there are plenty of other hotels to choose from. I would recommend staying away from this one.
