Category: Historic Hotel. If you and your dogs want to travel back in time about 100 years, book a couple of nights at this 1927 inn. Although styled as an “inn”, it reminds me of the grand hotels of yesteryear, just a little smaller. Admire its imposing red brick edifice and stroll through the porte-cochere and colonnade into the spacious lobby. This is where you’ll be temporally transported by the ornate coffered ceiling, tiled fireplace, antique shoe-shine bench, mosaic-tiled floor, comfy chairs on Oriental rugs, end tables with Tiffany lamps, Palladian doors and windows, Medieval-ish chandeliers, a grand piano and a harpsichord, and an antique telephone exchange. Because we were accompanied by our three Siberian Huskies, we chose a suite for our accommodations. The bedroom area was dominated by a king-sized bed, which was just large enough for the five of us. Antique oak furniture, Tiffany-style lamps, and a TV completed the room. The parlor had a leather sofa bed, Oriental-ish rug, TV, another chair, a small fridge, a small desk, and a couple of pieces of furniture. The bathroom was small but functional, with a powerful shower and a slow-close toilet seat (which should be mandatory in all hotels). Overall, the suite was not fancy but it was well-appointed, comfortable, and perfect for our Pack. Although the hotel allows dogs, they cannot be left unattended in the rooms, so of course they joined us for dinner. The original plan was to take them to one of several downtown restaurants with dog friendly patios. But the hotel’s lobby is dog friendly and has a couple of tables near the large window overlooking Gurley Street. We chose the table closest to the window and ordered dinner from the Peacock Room, the hotel’s casual but elevated restaurant. From our table we were able to enjoy the live music in the Historic Bar. Dinner was excellent, as was the service. And the butter was soft! Hallelujah. The dogs appreciated the water bowl provided by our attentive server. Be sure to stroll down the grand staircase to the lower level, where you will find the Peacock 🦚 Room and a couple of conference/party rooms. If you are inclined to an al fresco cocktail, you will find several tables outside the main entrance. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice
