We stayed at the Best Western Plus South Edmonton Inn & Suites for two nights during our 7 year old daughter's hockey tournament two weeks ago, and unfortunately, this was one of the most frustrating hotel experiences we've had in over 30 years of travel (and I'm speaking for many of the other parents/guests/coaches, here).
Early check-in fees: Many families from our team arrived about an hour before the standard check-in time. The hotel charged $20 per family for early access. In our experience with other hotels, this fee is often waived for groups or tournaments, especially when rooms are ready.
Room condition: The rooms were in poor shape right from check-in. We noticed black mold on the bathtub tiles, a strong musty odor throughout, and very dated carpet. Even the wall outlets were so worn that phone chargers wouldn't stay plugged in properly. The overall cleanliness and maintenance felt well below standard.
Pool issues: The pool was unheated and extremely cold. Several children, including ours, developed painful skin rashes after swimming, which we attribute to overly strong or poorly balanced chemicals in the water. When raised with the manager (Peter Smith), he dismissed it by suggesting the kids had sweated from earlier hockey play—even though the rashes appeared before any games that day.
Parking lot hazards: The lot was poorly maintained with significant snow and ice buildup, creating tripping risks for everyone, especially kids and adults carrying gear.
Team room and accusations: Our team had reserved a conference/breakfast room. The manager accused the group of stealing yogurt from the dispenser (claiming half of the commercial sized tub was missing) without any proof, despite available video footage. He also claimed a violation of the no-mini-sticks policy. Video review showed only a brief (~1-minute) instance before parents intervened and stopped it—hardly the major infraction portrayed.
Housekeeping: Due to short staffing, the hotel announced no routine cleaning during our stay unless specifically requested. Given the condition of the rooms upon arrival, this offered little value anyway.
Check-out response: When asked about our stay at the front desk, I honestly shared our concerns, including the mold and musty smell. The response was simply that the hotel has future renovation plans—no apology, no offer to address the issues, and no real accountability.
Follow-up issues: Two weeks later, the manager continues to send threatening emails to our team and has escalated the matter to our minor hockey association with what are distorted claims that have little to no supporting evidence. At the time of our stay, our team's coaches and manager showed ample respect and understanding to the hotel manager's (Peter's) concerns, even though they we're greatly exaggerated, and deemed minor. Our hockey team consists of young, sweet little 7 year old girl hockey players, so as anyone can imagine, their impact on the hotel and other guests experience would be inconsequential.
In summary, this property felt poorly managed and unprepared for group stays, particularly hockey teams. As parents, in hindsight, we figured that the hotel's management are nickel and diming their guests as a means to fund this potential restoration that they have on the horizon. We've had excellent experiences at nearby options like the Four Points by Sheraton, Sandman - across the street, here, with no similar problems. Unless you have very low expectations for cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere—especially if traveling with kids or a sports team. Plenty of other options in the Edmonton area.
