This was a very disappointing experience for a long-time Hilton member who has trusted the brand around the world.
During checkout, I noticed that the amount charged to my card didn’t match the invoice. When I asked about the difference, I was told it might be a deposit. However, I was never informed at check-in or check-out about any deposit or the exact rate for my stay.
Additionally, I was charged 5 CAD after checkout and I was told it was for water bottles. Although there were no water bottles, kettle, iron or SLIPPERS in the room!!
I had requested a higher floor, but I was placed on the 7th floor in a connecting room instead, where I could clearly hear noise from the adjacent room. The A/C was also very noisy. The shower allowed water to flood the bathroom and flow into the room.
Marco, who checked me in, later sent a message asking how my stay was. I replied and clearly explained all of these issues. Instead of resolving them, I was later asked to provide a rating without any of the problems being addressed.

Terrible location. Two blocks from city's largest homeless shelter, streets lined with drug addicts. Right beside light railway lines. Not a safe location.

The rooms are a nice size and clean. The cleaning and bar staff are nice. The location is great.
The facilities don't support the number of guests. The bar and breakfast room is constantly running out of things.
The swimming pool and whirlpool are full of screaming unattended children. Some definitely too young to be left unattended. The staff never check on this area. Had children climbing over me in the whirlpool, even when we went down at 8/9pm. The breakfast room is no better.
We were overcharged for our room. When I tried to query this the receptionist kept repeating about the $200 card hold. That wasn't what I was even querying. They then continued to speak to me like I was a moron.

Overall, I was very happy with our stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Calgary Downtown. I noticed a previous review mentioning firm mattresses as a downside, but for me it was the opposite — I love a firm mattress and found it extremely comfortable. I slept very well.
The hotel feels fairly new or at least freshly renovated. Everything looked modern, clean, and well maintained.
We had two families staying for one night, and the only thing none of us loved was the tile flooring in the rooms. We stayed during cold December days, and stepping on cold tiles barefoot wasn’t very pleasant. Complimentary slippers in the room would have been a nice touch.
The breakfast buffet was great and exceeded expectations. They even had pulled pork, which is rare to find at standard hotel breakfast buffets.
The staff was friendly and polite throughout our stay.
One minor downside was the heater in the room — it kept turning on and off during the night and was fairly loud. Other than that, the room itself was quiet, and the window insulation was excellent. We couldn’t hear the busy downtown noise at all.
The location is excellent, especially for those without a vehicle. Public transit is easily accessible, and there are plenty of downtown restaurants, shops, and amenities within walking distance.
Overall, a very comfortable stay with a few small things that could be improved. I would definitely consider staying here again.

A Tale of Two Lobbies
Stayed here because our room was booked by the host of a Christmas party. We came down from Edmonton. Everyone likes a road trip, a free hotel, and a Christmas party.
I have stayed in the east village and this place is clean, close to amenities and has all the buildings and whistles of a major hotel. $58
Here’s the thing. The lobbies are clearly not designed as traditional hotel lobbies. I have no idea about the history of this building, but when you walk in, you don’t immediately realize you’re in the lobby of a hotel. One side feels like a lobby, the other feels like half of a lobby. If you walk into the wrong one — which we did — you’re not greeted properly.
Signage is either nonexistent or unclear.
When you finally ask at the desk, the response comes across as someone who has had enough of saying the same thing all day:
“Your lobby is over there.”
There’s a more polite way to handle that. Something like, “We actually have two lobbies — let me point you in the right direction.” Small difference, big impact.
Accommodations themselves are good. Rooms are comfortable, amenities are solid, and the TVs are nice and large. Getting to the parkade was a bit of a challenge since only one elevator in each bank goes down, and the one on our side wasn’t working. That felt more frustrating than it needed to be, but it happens.
Final thought:
This is a perfectly standard stay with good rooms and amenities. A clearer lobby setup — or at least a warmer, more service-minded greeting — would elevate the experience noticeably. Sometimes it really is the first five minutes that set the tone.
