  Very friendly staff and very helpful. Camping gear worked very well. Camping food was delicious. Head lamp was very bright.

  Place is always overpriced for everything. Want a basic tent for $400? This is the place for you. I like what they have and what they stand for but I'm not going to throw away money just because I have it.

  I've long been a member and fan of REI, but today I dropped by the Richmond, VA store for a lightweight button-up shirt and a metal water bottle. The absence of all-cotton shirts - in favor of various artificial fabrics - was stunning. The selection of steel (non-plastic) water bottles? Ditto. That, plus the absence/incorrectness of price postings was depressing. I used my credits to buy a water bottle and left - without that shirt, and with no inclination to return in the foreseeable future.

  I visited this store on a busy Saturday 3/28 with my wife and our well-behaved pup. My wife and I took turns using the restroom, and while I was away, an employee named ALICE (WHITE HAIR PONYTAIL) approached my wife and immediately questioned whether our dog was a service animal. My wife replied that he was not, and explained that he was sitting quietly and out of the way — as he always does — and not bothering anyone. Despite this, ALICE told my wife that we would need to leave the store. What made the interaction more confusing was that another male employee nearby had just politely waved and greeted our dog moments earlier, suggesting there was no immediate concern or consistent approach. I had specifically come in to purchase a pair of KÜHL pants. After this experience, however, I chose to leave and instead went to Duluth Trading Company, a dog-friendly establishment, where I ended up purchasing two pairs of pants. I’ve been an REI Co-op member since 2012 and have visited this store multiple times with my dog without any previous issues. Losing a long-time customer over an abrupt and unfriendly interaction is disappointing — especially considering REI sells numerous dog-related items and promotes an outdoor lifestyle that many customers share with their pets. I understand policies must be followed, but the way this situation was handled felt unnecessarily confrontational and inconsistent with the welcoming, community-focused experience I’ve come to expect from REI. Unfortunately, after 14 years as a customer, this experience has made me reconsider shopping here indefinitely
