  About 3 months ago when I was checking out I was asked if I would like to become a member. The cashier also said “it comes with a $30 gift card.” I thought that sounded great so I signed up. After checking out, I noticed the price was a bit high so I asked about it. I was then informed that the membership itself costs $30 and you get a $30 “gift card” for signing up. I was a little frustrated and pointed out that it is not a gift card but just a card I paid for in advance. I do not buy from REI enough to purchase a membership but I didn’t want to be difficult so I just left it and thought “well I guess I’ll use it at some point.” Fast forward to today, I needed a sun guard so I went to use my gift card. Come to found out it had expired after one month of purchasing it… I guess I should have looked for that but I didn’t think it would expire so soon, seeing that I paid for it. Additionally, one month is too short a time frame in my opinion. If it’s going to expire it should have at least one year. The employees who helped me were very nice and did their job, I understand REI is a large company and the employees have limited power. With that being said, signing up for a membership has been a very negative experience overall. The purchase of a membership and the “gift card” need to be properly explained to customers because I left feeling like I got scammed twice.

  Yeah, I could have been posting a great review, the salt lake store service is actually great. I have emails and info showing my online order is on the way, out for delivery, only to see it’s cancelled. No notice of the refund to my account. Tomorrow is Backcountry’s turn. It’s just a raincoat, and at full price.

  This is the mothership for REI in Utah. Great staff and tons of gear. Make sure to visit the used gear section as well!

  Tom in rentals was easygoing, helpful, and patient as I was trying to figure out how to equip a large party of kids of all ages and adults. Great conversation swapping stories of adventures we’ve had. Huge contrast to the lady in Rentals last year who clearly didn’t want to be there and told me I was “making her life difficult” with all the sizes I was trying to figure out. Tom had great suggestions and figured out how to save me a few trips and no stress on my way back to SLC Thanks, Tom!
