"Free money" he said (which it's not, it's a store credit so you have to spend at least $30 to get back the membership cost). Then he said we couldn't return anything to REI if we didn't have a membership, it would have to be done with the manufacturer directly. Really?? The cashier’s insistence on the upsell ruined an otherwise positive experience.

This location is amazing, located in Bend's Old Mill District and filled with employees who are enthusiasts and experts in their product area. We recently purchased a pair of Merrell hiking shoes online from the "Outlet" with a significant discount. We ordered a .5 size larger than I normally wear based on reviews of the shoe. Too big. On a trip to Bend, we stopped in to REI to do a return or exchange. The sales person explained that these are great shoes, but they did not have this exact style in my size in stock. He offered to refund our purchase and sell us the new size at the same price. This surprised us as the discount was real money. And, he said they would ship to our house and be there in a few days. We said yes. The shoes showed up and they fit perfect. Already have about 100 miles on them and very comfortable. Old Mill has tons to do and lots of free parking.
