The cashier (Michael) provided no guidance at all regarding my membership or payment options. When I asked about using my rewards number, his response and tone came across as condescending and dismissive. I’m both surprised and not surprised to see many reviews here describing similar checkout experiences with him. That consistency is concerning. It doesn’t align with the welcoming, customer-focused experience REI is known for, and it definitely impacts whether I’d feel comfortable returning.

He's mentioned in other reviews — an older gentleman named Michael. The first time he acted unkindly to me, I thought he was just having a bad day and let it go. Then I came there another time and he was awful AGAIN — rude, condescending, and almost mean. I started thinking it was something about me. Then I talked with other people who go there and they had the same experience! Now I read these reviews and see that it's totally a pattern with this guy. Why is he like this?! And why is he allowed within 20 feet of a customer? Everything else about the store is fine, including all the other staff I've met.
