Regardless of how I played, Tobacco Road was some of the most fun I’ve had during a round of golf! Such a pleasant experience from the starters, to some of the spotters along the course, everyone was kind and knowledgeable. The property is beautiful and super unique. After the round we enjoyed a great pro shop merchandise selection and a delicious spicy pimento cheese dog. I would recommend everyone who admires the game of golf to try out Tobacco Road!
CAUTION! Ridiculous and dangerous golf ahead!! If there is golf in Hell, I am pretty sure this is where you play.
I played Tobacco Road on Tuesday, July 8. It was an epic disappointment. This course is NOT a SERIOUS golf course. Sure, it’s in the Golf Digest Best 100, but how it got there is one of life’s mysteries indeed because it has nothing good going for it.
Here is a list of the Bad:
1. Pro Shop – Nothing special
2. Driving Range – Inferior to a heavily-used muni course
3. Putting Green – Beats me because it was closed
4. Directional Signage – Pathetic
5. Greens – Just acceptable, nothing more
6. Ball washers – None
7. GPS – Very humble. The display is only a tad larger than my Galaxy S24.
Here is a list of the Ugly … and I do mean UGLY:
1. You must book on line and pay a $10 booking fee, and then pummel you with incessant emails and texts.
2. Confusing tee locations. Call me a purist, but painted farm implements are not better than standard colored tee markers.
3. Blind shots are abundant. On numerous holes you literally cannot see the green even when you are 30 yards in front of it. In one case, their use of a 12-foot-long flag stick did little to help locate the hole.
4. While there are no “sand traps,” there is an overwhelming number of “waste areas,” so many and so large that you are permitted to drive your cart in them. And forget hitting cleanly from them because they are 40% sand, 40% packed dirt, and 20% ROCKS.
5. Bugs! Geeze the bugs!! Buzzing gnats were in my face (and ears and eyes) for the entire round.
6. Hazardous drop-offs from fairway to waste areas. Exercise serious caution getting into and out of these suckers. Falling is a definite risk.
And as a final point of pain, the Ranger insulted me when I calmly told him I did not like the course by asking if I was married, then telling me he felt sorry for my wife.
Clearly, I did not like my experience, but fortunately it will not be repeated because Hell will freeze over before I return.
Played here for the third time on Sunday and this course couldn’t be in better shape. Between all of the staff and the beauty of this course, it’s worth every penny. Can’t wait to be back!
We just played Tobacco Road, and the course was in absolutely pristine condition from tee to green. If you've never been, it is a visual wonderland and an absolute blast to play, definitely a true "experience" bucket-list course.
That being said, the price has definitely crept up over the years as the course's reputation has grown. Is it worth $329 a round? Honestly, that’s going to be in the eye of the beholder. I’ve personally played courses in just as good of condition for far less money.
But there is truly nothing else quite like the layout and vibe here. If the guys asked me to come back and play it again on a future golf trip, I’d absolutely say yes. It’s a track every golfer should experience at least once!

My dad and I went out to play Tobacco Road as it was one of our bucket list courses. We got there and the course was in great shape and the staff were super friendly. The layout is challenging and the greens were in great shape. However, the overall experience was ruined by the pairing process.
We paid roughly $400 to play our bucket list golf course and were paired with two golfers who honestly had no business being on a course of this caliber. They were by far the worst golfers we’ve ever been paired with, which led to an extremely slow and frustrating round. When you’re paying that kind of money, you expect the course to do a better job of matching groups by pace of play and skill level.
The course itself was good, but the experience was not. For the price, I expected much better management of tee times and pairings. Unfortunately, because of that, I would not choose to play here again.
