  Good outdoor-ish store. I do a lot of backpacking. As a supply/resupply store (for backpacking gear) it's, at best, a middle of the road store. The gear is on the expensive side and you might be limited on what you actually need. I prefer my tents, quilts, packs, and most other gear from smaller online shops. Where REI shines is that it has a good stock of clothing and smaller incidentals, like fuel and dehydrated meals. If you what you mostly do is day hikes and the occasional overnight, this place rocks. Once you get more serious, you'll need a better source for gear. All that being said, I use REI for Kuhl brand clothing and stove fuel, and very occasionally, shoes. I will also say that if you're just getting into outdoors sports, REI is a good place to build a kit from. Their return policy is good, so if you want to try different packs/tents/bags and such to get a sense of what works for you, go here (just be careful, I know people who can no longer return items, because they have been deemed to have abused the policy).

  I don't normally write reviews, but after my recent experience here at REI, I feel compelled to. I came here to gather some parts for a bike project I've been working on at home. When I inquired about measurements for a new saddle, I was met with confusion, an unhelpful shoulder shrug, and after the floor rep went to talk with the bike shop crew, I heard mentions that "the measurements device was too expensive to order for the shop" and to "try having them sit on cardboard" to which the floor rep responded "I'm not doing that." The floor team seemed to be more interested in selling memberships than anything else, and thankfully after noticing I didn't care too much for the sale pitch, the floor rep gave me a slip so other people wouldn't try to deliver the same sale (it didn't work). The bike shop team did provide *a bit* more specific help with questions I had on parts and helped me locate some that weren't obviously displayed. Unfortunately, the attitude carried by one shop tech felt condescending when I mentioned I was working on a project, seemingly more interested in having me bring the bike in to pay them to work on it, dismissing my mechanical aptitude off-hand. Ultimately, if you are looking for professional opinions or guidance regarding bicycles, or specific help in replacing parts yourself, I reccomend searching elsewhere. The selection at the shop for parts is quite limited, and frankly, over priced, and the employees were actually less helpful than a Google search. REI likes to call themselves a co-op, seemingly not understanding what an actual co-op is, and I certainly won't be looking here for any form of concrete knowledge in the future.
