I had a really fantastic experience at this gym. I was greeted by Clara at the front desk and she was very helpful and kind. She answered all of my questions and made me feel very comfortable and welcome as a beginner climber! I will be spending more time at this gym thanks to the support and warmth that Clara and the rest of the staff offer. Thanks Clara!!
Frequently Asked Questions About Central Rock Gym - Midtown
Do I need a Participation Agreement?
Yes, you need a Participation Agreement! Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We require a Participation Agreement from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes.
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.
I have never been climbing before, what are my options?
You have a number of options depending on the Central Rock Gym location you choose to visit.
Bouldering Only Facility:
You can climb on our bouldering walls. Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing.
Rope Facility:
You can take an intro belay class to learn all the requirements for using the facility. This class typically takes a little over 1 hour and can be registered online. Once completed you’ll have full access to the gym and have skills to allow you to belay anywhere in the country!
Many of our rope gym locations have “Staff Belay” which is a program where our staff provide all the assistance to let you climb on ropes without taking classes. Space is limited to 4 climbers per group so pre-registration is recommended. We will pair multiple groups together until we get to the maximum size of 4 participants.
Who can sign a Participation Agreement for a minor (under 18 years of age)?
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count. Minors visiting any of our Florida locations must have BOTH a Participation Agreement and an Under-18 Participation Agreement (FLORIDA) signed by a parent or legal guardian.
How much does it cost to climb?
Pricing varies by location, but all CRG locations offer day passes, punch passes, and monthly memberships. Check your local gym page for current rates and first-time member specials!
Do I need to make a reservation to climb?
No reservation is required just to climb, but you can pre-purchase your day pass online if you'd like! Reservations are recommended and may be required for some classes. A few locations may require reservations to use the auto belays on weekends or at peak times — check your location's site.
Can I bring a group into the gym?
Yes, groups are welcomed! If bringing a group of 8 or more just to drop in and climb, please email the location with details of group size and visit date/time — the earlier the better. If you're interested in hosting a party or guided group event, check out our Book Your Event page.
What types of memberships are offered?
We offer flexible, cost-effective monthly memberships — typically the best value if you climb 4+ times per month. Memberships are billed monthly, giving you freedom to adjust as your schedule changes. Options are available for individuals and families, with some locations offering discounts based on age, student status, or military affiliation.
Do I need experience to climb at Central Rock Gym?
No experience is needed. Our gyms offer beginner-friendly routes and bouldering problems, plus staff support. We recommend trying Bouldering or Auto Belaying (if available), or checking out our Intro to Climbing classes and Climb with an Instructor sessions. During a one-hour Climb with an Instructor session, a trained staff member guides you through the facility, manages the ropes, recommends climbs, and provides personalized tips. Exact offerings vary by location.
Do I have to take a class if it's my first time?
Classes are not required for first-time climbers, but we recommend them! Our brief Intro to Climbing class helps you navigate the facility and climbing grades, and get started with technique tips. After the class you can stay as long as you'd like and apply your new skills.
What do I need to know to climb properly?
Our Intro to Climbing class is great for first-timers or those feeling rusty. Classes aren't required, but here are a few beginner tips: plan your climb so it doesn't intersect with other climbers already on the wall; if not actively climbing, don't stand on bouldering mats or under auto belays (fall zones); keep your arms relaxed to conserve energy; push with your legs for power; stand on your toes for mobility and reach.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable to move around in — flexible pants that aren't too baggy, and shorts or pants that don't need a belt (think Phys. Ed. class). We have all the gear you need, so just bring socks to wear with rental shoes.
Do I need special equipment to rock climb?
We provide all the gear needed but encourage you to bring your own if you've got it — we'll fit you for climbing shoes and provide a harness as part of our rental package. Appropriate footwear and equipment is required; your own climbing shoes/harness are welcome if in good condition, with a fabric belay loop, and within the manufacturer's guidelines.
How long should I plan for my first climbing session?
Most first-time visits last 1–2 hours, but you're welcome to stay as long as you'd like with a day pass. Many locations offer more than climbing — fitness spaces, lounge areas, and games like ping pong and foosball.
What types of climbing are available?
Varies by location, but may include: Bouldering (no ropes, shorter padded walls, no partner needed); Auto Belaying (mechanical devices for climbing/descending taller walls solo — user weight range 25–309 lbs per TruBlue guidelines); Top Rope climbing (rope anchored at top, managed by a belayer partner — belayers must pass a Top Rope Belay Test, and a Top Rope Orientation form is required); Lead climbing (more advanced, clipping rope into protection points while ascending — requires Top Rope Certification plus a Lead Climbing Belay Test and signed Lead Climbing Orientation form).
What is "belaying" and how do I learn?
Belaying is managing the rope so the climber doesn't fall, and lowering them safely to the ground. Rope facilities offer an approximately 1-hour Learn the Ropes class throughout the week, bookable online. You must be 13 or older to belay at CRG facilities. Not all locations offer rope climbing.
Do you have auto-belays?
Many locations have auto-belays, but offerings vary — check your location's page for amenities. An auto belay orientation from staff is required before use. Children under 13 must be supervised and clipped in/out by a parent, guardian, or adult chaperone who has also completed an orientation. Some locations may require reservations on weekends/peak hours.
Do I have to take a belay class in order to climb?
No — you don't need a belay class for top rope routes, auto belays, or boulders. However, to access top rope climbs without a class, you'll need a climbing partner with a CRG Top Rope Certification, or you can book a Climb with an Instructor session where staff manage the ropes for you.
I already know how to belay. Do I have to take a belay class?
If you know the PLUS/PBUS belay method and can tie a figure-8 follow-through knot, you don't need a class — just take a Top Rope Belay Test administered by staff to become certified. Lead Climbing Certification requires Top Rope Certification first; both can be obtained on the same visit.
What knots does CRG accept for climbers?
A figure-8 follow-through with a minimum 6" tail is the only knot accepted at CRG.
Can kids climb?
Yes — indoor climbing is great for kids of all ages, building strength, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Some locations may have restrictions on times/areas for younger climbers. Many gyms offer kid-friendly areas and youth classes, teams, and camps. Climbers under 13 require adult (18+) supervision in the facility.
Is there an age limit?
Climbing is for all ages, with programs for different age groups and abilities. Minimum age requirements can vary by location, especially for belaying or certain gym areas. Climbers younger than 13 must have adult supervision. Check your local gym's specific policies.
How young is too young to start climbing?
They're never too young technically — it's more about physical readiness on a case-by-case basis. Visitors as young as 5 frequently climb at our facilities. If they fit our smallest harnesses and weigh at least 25 lbs (the auto belay weight minimum), we'd be happy to get them climbing! Some locations may restrict times/areas for younger climbers.
Is there a kids area?
Some locations have dedicated child-friendly climbing sections with shorter walls, making communication and comfort easier for young climbers. Even without a dedicated area, we aim to offer beginner-friendly, accessible climbs for all ages. Some locations may have time/area restrictions for younger climbers.
Do you have any youth activities?
Yes! We offer birthday parties, summer camps, youth climbing teams, and private coaching for kids. Click "Kids" on the navigation menu for more info. Not all youth programs are offered at every location — check your location's website.
Do you offer classes?
Yes! A full lineup including climbing instruction, yoga, and fitness. New climbers can start with Intro to Climbing and Learn the Ropes. Those looking to improve can try our Climbing Progression Program, Learn to Lead, and Private Coaching. Yoga and fitness classes support balance, mobility, recovery, and wall-ready strength. Schedules vary by location.
Do I have to sign up for classes or can I just show up?
Pre-registration is highly recommended — classes fill up fast, though there's a waitlist if a class is full. Some classes may allow walk-ins if space is available, but it's not guaranteed. Check your local gym's schedule and book ahead to secure a spot.
Is there an age limit for classes?
Age limits depend on the specific class — some are geared toward adults, others designed with kids in mind. Check your location for offerings and age requirements.
