A solid climbing gym in the greater Atlanta area, part of a chain with multiple locations around the city. This spot offers both rope climbing and bouldering, which makes it a great all-around facility.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of beginner-friendly routes along with a good number of autobelays. It’s also a popular place for families and kids, with lots of options for all skill levels.
Overall, a welcoming gym with a good variety of climbs and a relaxed atmosphere. Parking is available in a nearby annex lot with plenty of space.

Great gym with a good number of walls to climb on. The staff here are always friendly. We're pretty new to climbing so it seemed like the top rope options were limited but this month it seems like there was a lot more than I remember from previous months. I could be wrong. I do like that there's top roping versus some gyms are all auto belays. There's a ton of lead climbing routes which look cool but I don't think my skill level will get there. On occasions I'll attempt a 5.10 route but I hardly get off the ground before I can't find a hand hold I can hold onto and I have to bail back to easier routes. I can do 5.7 and 5.8. One day when my kid learns to belay, maybe I can try some 5.9s. She can get up 5.9s but she's stronger than me.
Frequently Asked Questions About Central Rock Gym - Atlanta
Do I need a Participation Agreement?
Yes, you need a Participation Agreement! Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We require a Participation Agreement from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes.
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.
I have never been climbing before, what are my options?
You have a number of options depending on the Central Rock Gym location you choose to visit.
Bouldering Only Facility:
You can climb on our bouldering walls. Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing.
Rope Facility:
You can take an intro belay class to learn all the requirements for using the facility. This class typically takes a little over 1 hour and can be registered online. Once completed you’ll have full access to the gym and have skills to allow you to belay anywhere in the country!
Many of our rope gym locations have “Staff Belay” which is a program where our staff provide all the assistance to let you climb on ropes without taking classes. Space is limited to 4 climbers per group so pre-registration is recommended. We will pair multiple groups together until we get to the maximum size of 4 participants.
Who can sign a Participation Agreement for a minor (under 18 years of age)?
All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a Participation Agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.
Minors visiting any of our Florida locations must have BOTH a Participation Agreement and also an Under-18 Participation Agreement (FLORIDA) by a parent or legal guardian.
How much does it cost to climb?
Pricing varies by location, but all CRG locations offer day passes, punch passes, and monthly memberships. Check your local gym page for current rates and first-time member specials! Mighty
Do I need to make a reservation to climb?
No reservation required just to climb, but you can pre-purchase your day pass online if you’d like! Reservations are recommended and may be required for some classes.
A few locations may require reservations to use the auto belays on weekends or at peak times. To see if this is something your location requires, visit the location’s site.
Can I bring a group into the gym?
Yes, groups are welcomed! If you are planning to bring a group of 8 or more climbers just to drop in and climb, it is always greatly appreciated if you are able to provide notice. We ask that you email the location you wish to visit with the details of how many climbers your 8+ individual group will have as well as when you plan to visit. The earlier you can give us a heads up, the better, especially with larger groups as we can help you know what to expect, direct you to the required forms, and even help you pre-pay for your group online.
If you are interested in hosting a party or guided group event with us, check out our Book Your Event page for how you can organize your next event at CRG.
What types of memberships are offered?
We offer monthly memberships designed to be flexible and cost-effective. Pricing is structured so that if you climb 4 or more times per month, a membership is typically the best value.
Memberships are billed monthly, giving you the freedom to adjust as your schedule changes.
Options are available for individuals and families, and some locations may offer additional discounts based on age, student status, or military affiliation. Check with your specific location for exact pricing and to see if any discounted rates are available for that specific location.
Do I need experience to climb at Central Rock Gym?
No experience is needed. Our indoor rock climbing gyms offer beginner-friendly routes and bouldering problems, plus staff support to help you get started.
For those with no prior climbing experience, we recommend trying Bouldering or Auto Belaying (if available at your CRG location) or checking out our Intro to Climbing classes and Climb with an Instructor sessions!
Many of our locations offer Climb with an Instructor where you are paired with a staff member who will guide you during your time in the gym and customize the experience to your goals. During this one-hour session, a trained staff member will guide you through the facility, manage the ropes for you (at facilities which offer rope climbing), recommend climbs, and provide personalized climbing tips. Book this session in advance and online at the location which you plan to visit.
Exact types of climbing and instruction available depend on the location. Check your local CRG’s website to confirm and book classes or explore the types of climbing offered at that location.
Do I have to take a class if it’s my first time?
While classes are not required for first time climbers, we recommend taking them! It’s the perfect way to start your climbing journey on the right foot! We have classes designed for first time climbers and those who want to expand their skills and knowledge further.
Our brief Intro to Climbing class is designed just for you and your friends to help you navigate the facility and climbing grades like a pro and get you started with climbing technique tips and tricks.
After the class you can stay as long as you’d like and apply your new skills on the wall!
What do I need to know to climb properly?
First time climbing? We’ve got just the thing! Our Intro to Climbing class is designed just for you to help you navigate the facility and climbing grades like a pro and get you started with climbing technique tips and tricks.
Returning to climbing but feeling a bit rusty with the grades and fundamentals? Intro to Climbing is the perfect refresher to help you jump back in with confidence!
Classes are not required for first time visitors, but it just might be the jumpstart you’re looking for in your climbing journey!
In the meantime, here are a few of our best tips for beginners
– Plan your climb to make sure it doesn’t intersect with other climbers already on the wall
– If you are not actively climbing, do not stand on the bouldering mats or under the auto belays as this is considered a fall zone
– Keep your arms relaxed to conserve energy (try not to have t-rex arms)
– Push with your legs for power
– Stand on your toes for mobility and reach
What should I wear?
Wear something that you are comfortable moving around in. We suggest flexible pants and something that is not too baggy. It is recommended that you wear shorts or pants that do not need a belt. Think: Phys. Ed. Class.
We have all of the gear you need for climbing, so no need to worry about that part! Just make sure you bring socks to wear with our rental shoes.
Do I need special equipment to rock climb?
We provide all the gear needed to climb but also encourage you to bring your own, if you’ve got it! We’ll get you fitted for the right pair of climbing shoes and provide a harness if needed as part of our rental gear package.
We do require that appropriate footwear and equipment be used, but if you have your own climbing shoes and harness (with a fabric belay loop, in good condition, and no older than the manufacturer’s guidelines) you are welcome to use them!
How long should I plan for my first climbing session?
Most first-time visits last 1-2 hours, but you’re welcome to stay as long as you would like with a day pass. Many of our locations have a lot more than just climbing to offer, so be sure to check out our fitness spaces and lounge areas. Many CRG also offer games such as ping pong, foosball, and more!
What types of climbing are available?
The types of climbing available vary by location but at each Central Rock Gym location we offer one or more of the following types of climbing:
Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing, but it is a great way to meet new friends as you work on the same climbs together. Because no specialized skills are required for bouldering, it’s easy to jump right in as a beginner!
Auto Belaying is another great option for beginners who want to take on new heights or experienced climbers who want to scale taller walls without needing a partner! Auto belays are mechanical devices used in indoor rock climbing that let you climb and descend taller walls on your own with no partner needed. Per the manufacturer’s guidelines, the auto belays have a user weight range of 25 pounds to 309 pounds. For more information about TruBlue Auto Belays click here.
Top Rope climbing is a style of climbing where the rope runs through an anchor at the top of the wall and runs down to the climber who is tied in on one side and a belayer on the other. As you climb, your partner (the belayer) manages the rope through a belay device, keeping it tight and lowering the climber to the ground once the climb is completed.
Belayers must pass a Top Rope Belay Test administered by a CRG staff member prior to utilizing the designated climbing walls. If you are interested in learning how to belay (manage the rope), we recommend our Learn the Ropes class which can be booked online. Climbers and Belayers must sign a Top Rope Orientation form before top rope climbing/belaying.
Lead climbing is a more advanced style of climbing that involves clipping your rope into protection points as you go up the wall, instead of having the rope already anchored at the top.
Prior to lead climbing and belaying at CRG, participants must have a Top Rope Certification and must pass a Lead Climbing Belay Test administered by a CRG staff member. If you are Top Rope Certified and wish to learn how to lead climb and belay, we recommend our Learn to Lead class which can be booked online. Climbers and Belayers must sign a Lead Climbing Orientation form before lead climbing.
What is “belaying” and how do I learn?
Belaying is the process of managing the rope so that the person climbing does not fall to the ground when coming off the climbing wall. Belayers are also responsible for lowering the climber to the ground. Rope climbing facilities provide an approximately 1-hour Learn the Ropes class throughout the week which can be booked online.
You must be 13 years of age or older to belay at CRG facilities.
Not all locations offer rope climbing, so check with your location to see what styles of climbing are available there.
Do you have auto-belays?
Many of our locations do have auto-belays, but specific offerings depend on location! To confirm if your closest CRG location has auto belays, navigate to that specific location’s page to see a full list of amenities offered there. An auto belay orientation from a CRG staff member is required before using climbing on auto belays.
Children under the age of 13 must be supervised and clipped into and out of the autobelays by a parent, guardian, or adult chaperone who has also received an auto belay orientation.
Please note that a few locations may require auto belay reservations on weekends or other peak hours. Visit your location’s webpage to confirm if a reservation is necessary.
Do I have to take a belay class in order to climb?
No, you do not need to take a belay class in order to climb our top rope routes, auto belays, or boulders! However, in order to access top rope climbs you will need a climbing partner who does have a CRG Top Rope Certification to manage the rope for you.
If you do not have a Belay Certified climbing partner, you can book a Climb with an Instructor session where our staff will manage the ropes for you during the hour long session.
I already know how to belay. Do I have to take a belay class?
If you are an experienced climber and know the PLUS/PBUS belay method and can tie a figure-8 follow-through knot, you do not need to take a class. Take a Top Rope Belay Test administered by a CRG staff member to become certified.
If you also want to obtain a Lead Climbing Certification please note that you will need to be Top Rope Certified first. Both Certifications may be obtained on the same visit.
What knots does CRG accept for climbers?
A figure-8 follow-through with a minimal 6” tail is the only knot accepted at CRG.
Can kids climb?
Indoor rock climbing is a great activity for kids of all ages. It helps build strength, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving skills in a fun, supportive environment.
A few of our locations may have restrictions on what times or areas younger climbers can access the gym, so visit your location’s website to see if any restrictions apply.
Many of our gyms offer kid-friendly climbing areas, as well as programs like youth classes, teams, and camps. While some of our gyms may not have a specific area for kids, we make an effort to provide beginner friendly and accessible climbs for all ages and skill levels throughout our facilities!
Climbers under the age of 13 require adult supervision (18+) while in the facility.
Is there an age limit?
Rock climbing is for all ages. Most gyms welcome both kids and adults, with programs and terrain designed for different age groups and ability levels.
That said, minimum age requirements can vary by location, especially for activities like belaying or using certain areas of the gym. Climbers younger than 13 must have adult supervision.
It’s always best to check your local gym’s specific policies before visiting.
How young is too young to start climbing?
The short answer is they are never too young! That being said, it is more on a case by case basis as to whether they are physically mature enough to climb. There are many visitors who frequently climb at our facilities as early as 5 years old. If they can fit in our smallest harnesses and weigh at least 25 pounds (weight minimum for auto belays) then we’d be happy to get them climbing!
A few of our locations may have restrictions on what times or areas younger climbers can access the gym, so visit your location’s website to see if any restrictions apply.
Is there a kids area?
Some locations have a section of the gym dedicated to child friendly climbing. These walls are typically shorter in height, making it easier to communicate with the climber while on the wall and making the climber feel more comfortable in a unique environment. While some gyms do not have a specific kids area, we make an effort to provide beginner friendly and accessible climbs for all ages and skill levels throughout our facilities!
A few of our locations may have restrictions on what times or areas younger climbers can access the gym, so visit your location’s website to see if any restrictions apply.
