The only cashier repeatedly refused to take no for an answer and even let the line build up behind me just to continue negotiating. It felt like they wanted an argument. I also had to sit through the whole sales pitch from a different associate who was retrieving a pair of shoes for me. They aren’t as pushy at the store in KOP.

If the person helping you hasn't done what you are going to do (such as a thru hike) ask the employee to get someone who has done that activity so you can talk to someone with personal experience. Yes it is expensive but when it comes to camping & hiking you get what you pay for.
