  Purchased a backpack online and brought it in for a tutorial. Evan helped me so much, he adjusted my backpack at least five different times and taught me all about each strap and what purpose it serves. I definitely got the value and quality that makes REI surpass other stores.

  As the author of The Most Crucial Knots to Know and The Motivated Amateur’s Guide to Winter Camping, I like checking gear setups at REI locations, and REI in Woodland Hills is a very nice store in an upscale shopping area. The store has a two-story design with a strong layout. Right in the middle there’s a spiral-style wooden staircase that becomes a focal point, and the mezzanine level above gives you a great view across the entire store. It’s a clean design that feels intentional and easy to move through. The camping section is well stocked, especially the sleeping bag selection, which is strong. The bike area is solid, and the climbing section stands out with a good range of rope, hardware, and carabiners. It feels like a store that’s set up for actual use, not just display. The shoe section sits upstairs, and the layout makes it easy to work through different categories without feeling crowded. Overall, the store is well organized and fully stocked across the board. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable, which makes a difference when you’re dialing in gear. As the author of The Grant Colson Thriller Series and SERA Archives thriller novels, I also pay attention to how real gear is used and staged, and places like this help ground those details. Parking is straightforward. There’s a small area out front, but if it’s full, there’s a large parking garage behind the store that’s easy to access. Overall, it’s a well-designed REI in Woodland Hills with a great layout, strong selection, and a polished feel.

  I used to regularly bring my snowboard to this REI location for hot wax service. Over the last two years, it seems like they’ve become reluctant to do hot waxes — they often quote a minimum wait time of 4 days. That’s surprising, especially during this past season when snow conditions were poor and far fewer people were getting their boards waxed.
