  Please note that this review applies only to the REI located on Expo Parkway in Sacramento. I've been an REI customer for 30+ years (and a member for about 20). I've shopped on line and at about 25 brick-and-mortor locations across the nation. Today was — by a large margin — the worst customer service I've experienced with REI. I don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. That standard should apply to all customers. Yet, the associate in the shoe department seemed more interested in chatting with some customers than ensuring a relatively equal distribution of service to all customers. I escalated this concern to a manager with a suggestion that the store might want to increase staffing levels in the shoe department, and that I would go to another location. She stated that the other locations would have the same staffing issue. So, lo and behold, I headed to another REI and was stunned to find two associates working in the shoe department! 🙃 Managers make excuses; leaders find solutions. Obviously, the individual proving oversight at the Sacramento location is the former and not the latter. This is also a continuing symptom of REI's shift from a service-oriented organization to one more concerned with the bottom line. Kim Waldmann, REI's Chief Commercial Officer, stated when she assumed the role in early-2026 that, “REI has always stood apart for its market leadership, trailblazing culture and member-first approach. . .” Well, Kim, given this experience (and that of other individuals who have posted reviews), that member-first approach at this location might be described as sub-optimal. Do yourself a favor — drive the extra distance to any of the other REIs in the area (e.g., Concord, Dublin, Berkeley). It will take more time but minimize interactions with the staff and managers at the Sacramento store.

  If you're driving a plug-in hybrid, or fully electric vehicle. You've got plenty of charge ports in this REI lot. It's great!

  Beautiful store with a great selection and a welcoming atmosphere. Everything was clean, well organized, and easy to find. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the restrooms were exceptionally clean. Highly recommend!
