  I shop at the REI in Marina regulary. I both browse the store and pickup online orders and have always found both the floor and the front end staff helpful and friendly. The 8pm closing is a challenge to my schedule and I seem to often be the last one in the store and usually have to ask the floor staff for help to make sure I find what I need. Even at the end of the day, the store seems to be neat and the shelves well stocked.

  Typical REI experience. Most of what I buy is Kühl and Arc'teryx pants and sweaters, and every visit feels about the same: very friendly employees, but rarely the items I actually came in for. The employees are honestly the reason this location gets four stars. They’re consistently helpful and pleasant. The problem is the inventory. They seem to carry only a couple of styles of pants, jackets, or sweaters, and that’s about it. Even when they do have something I want, there’s often only one or two of that item, and almost never in the size I need. It’s a nice store in a good location with plenty of parking, which makes the limited selection even more frustrating. The irony is that a physical retail store needs strong in-store sales to justify staying open, yet the inventory often feels like an afterthought. What makes it even stranger is that, as helpful as the staff are, they often end up encouraging customers to order online when the store doesn’t have what they came for. I’m not sure there’s much awareness of the connection between working in a retail store and routinely directing customers to make their purchases somewhere else.

  This is a review primarily for the bike shop, although I’ve had great experiences at REI in general. I recently bought a bike, not through REI, and needed help with several issues. I had the pleasure of meeting Kai when I was shopping in that department. She gave me more advice and suggestions than I could ever have hoped for, and it was solid advice that actually helped as well as products that met the needs that I had. She suggested I attend one of their workshops on bike repair. I did and had such a great experience. Trent led the class and not only personalized all his advice to my particular bike (it’s a bit different) he helped me to keep my body in a healthy position as to not injure myself. I got every question answered and had a great time on top of it all. It was worth twice was I paid for the class! These are people that are genuinely passionate about bikes and people. I highly recommend the classes and the service at the REI bike shop.
