  They don't respect REI's online return policy despite already having spoken to customer support and receiving written confirmation prior to visiting the store. I won't be going back to this location.

  I have to come on here to leave a glowing review for Spencer in the hiking shoes department specifically. Such a kind and caring gentleman that you can tell truly helps people with hiking shoes because he loves it. He knows so much and truly was so kind, helpful and genuine. I don’t have a lot of money so buying a fancy pair of hiking shoes was a big deal for me and him going out of his way to not only make me feel comfortable but helping me find exactly what works best for me. This was a big purchase and leaving knowing I made the right choice on top of knowledge to tie them better and know how to wear the best is huge. All my love and support to Spencer, this store is lucky to have him.

  My girlfriend really wants this specific shoe that is very hard to find. We called to ask if they have availability, and we were told to check online. What was the purpose of answering the phone call? You cannot simply check if that item is in stock? We live all the way in Orange County so if we make the trip and we are wrong, we’re screwed. Do your job and stop being lazy.

  As the author of The Most Crucial Knots to Know and The Motivated Amateur’s Guide to Winter Camping, I like checking gear setups at REI locations. REI in Marina del Rey is a very nice store. The layout is broad and easy to move through, with the checkout area on the left when you walk in and the camping section opening up on the right. The shoe area is large and includes a walking test wall, which makes it much easier to actually try footwear instead of guessing. There is a strong range of women’s and men’s outdoor clothing, and the backpack section stands out with cubby-style displays that make it easy to compare packs side by side. You will also see people bringing in skis for end of season tuning, which gives the store a more active, working feel. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and it is easy to get solid input if you are dialing in gear. As the author of The Grant Colson Thriller Series and SERA Archives, I also pay attention to how real-world gear is used, and places like this help ground those details. Do note that parking here is paid, which is really the only downside. Overall, it is a well-run REI in Marina del Rey with a strong layout, excellent selection, and a practical feel for real outdoor use.
