Wonderful REI with a great selection of camping gear. Staff was kind and helpful as well, especially Sydney who helped me with my membership

Been a member for 20+ years. This is my local store. Customer service has been declining at this store for a while, but the location is so convenient for me, I let it slide.
Not any longer! This week I tried picking up 2 separate orders: once from inside the store and another using curbside pickup. The employees at this location seem unwilling (rude/hostile) and/or unable (lack of customer service training) to deliver prompt pickup service. The in-store employee was blatantly rude and hostile in addition to being incompetent. The curbside pickup (used in an attempt to avoid the bitter, rude employee) was not convenient when I was left waiting and waiting with no update and finally had to call to get any service.
REI could learn a lesson or two from Target and Kohl’s when it comes to ease of pickup. The items are technically already paid for, why let rude, incompetent employees get in the way of you getting your gear? REI has clearly skimped on their app and the pickup experience demonstrates this in spades!
My last two experiences (yes, I reached out to the managers both times, with lackluster results) left such a bitter taste, any future shopping will either be done online to avoid the employee interaction or will be done at another location further from my home. I do not feel valued by REI so, I’ll also be looking to taking my business to REI’s competition and some of the lower priced online retailers like Campmor.

I attempted to return a pair of shoes today, but was told the soles needed to be cleaned with bleach wipes. The shoes were a little dusty, no mud and the uppers were clean. This is something I figured REI could do as I was not aware this was required before returning. The employee then turned around and grabbed a spray bottle and a rag. She told me to take the bleach spray and the rag into the bathroom and clean the shoes. I said no thank you and left. What has happened REI? Change your return policy if you are unhappy with the status of the products being returned. Not to mention bleach is probably not the best thing to clean shoes with.

Not sure what happened to REI but I just had the most bizarre and uncharacteristic experience when returning a pair of sneakers. The woman at the counter handed me a tub of bleach wipes and instructed me to wipe down the bottom sole of the sneakers. Sure, hand over the caustic chemicals and let me get to work with my bare hands. So I did my best and then advised her that the brown dirt stain on the bottom of the sneakers would not come clean.
She told me to try again.
I expressed my confusion because this just seemed highly unusual. The sneakers were clearly eligible for return and the top part (all parts visible when worn) was actually like-new and clean as new.
She decided to call a manager. Okay. Apart from her I’ve always enjoyed meeting new REI employees. Her aside, they’re knowledgeable, helpful and friendly!
Anyway, the manager said the shoes were fine so my assigned chore came to an abrupt and welcome end.
The manager explained they are simply trying to create a consistent experience when it comes to returns. Well, be that as it may, this experience was highly INconsistent with anything I’ve ever experienced at REI in over two decades of shopping there.
Is showboating the new REI vibe or is this perhaps a new and overly eager employee who has not yet assimilated in to the company’s culture? I guess time will tell.
