  I love REI! I have had a membership since the mid 1980s. Never disappointed, love their re-sale area! My husband has bought 3 pairs of Hokas from their re-sale area! I recently bought a Patagonia that had been reduced, it’s a red orange color, I love it! Was in Astoria for my honeymoon and it was perfect! Will visit an REI, whenever I am near one!

  REI has great customer service for selecting a backpack for fit and getting the appropriate capacity of backpack for how you intend to use it. I had bought two packs online, and XS/S and S/M. Tommy helped me learn how to adjust them and what to look for in the fit. He loaded the backpack with stuff sacks weighing 5-10 pounds to simulate what it would be like with weight in it. In front of the large mirror in the backpack fitting area, he pointed out areas that shouldn't gap and helped me adjust the length of the back of the pack. I would have had no idea about some of these adjustments without this fitting session. The cushioning of the belt on this style of pack even adjusts. With the backpacks being loaded with some weight, I could walk around with each pack and feel the difference. I had imagined the S/M would be a better fit, but actually found in order for the straps to rest snug on my shoulder I needed the XS/S. Tommy asked me what I noticed between the feel of the two packs when walking around and the XS/S didn't sway side to side like the S/M did, so one was clearly a better and more comfortable fit than the other. I appreciated that he didn't make the decision for me, leaving it to me to determine what was the best feel, only telling me after I decided that he thought that the XS/S was the best fit as well. Tommy also educated me about other details like looking for about 80% of the weight to be on the hips, and for the belt to ride just above the belly button. Without this session, I would have selected a pack which wasn't the best size for me and be having less than ideal comfort on my upcoming backpacking trip. The time I spent in the fitting was so well spent and I so appreciate that REI devotes staff to taking the time to do this with customers. I also appreciated Tommy asking me if he could help me with anything else and being able to try out the various backpacking sleeping pads (he even inflated one that wasn't on display for me). His knowledge in comparing and contrasting the pads in terms of weight, noise they make when you sleep on them, price, etc., made choosing a pad easy.
