We visited the AMF Mattydale location today with several families to celebrate the holiday, specifically because of their advertised “HoliDAY Fest” promotion. Both online and on-site signage clearly stated unlimited bowling from 11:00 AM–4:00 PM for $12.99 and unlimited arcade play from 11:00 AM–4:00 PM for $12.99, marketed as stress-free family entertainment.
When we called ahead, we were told that lanes were assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, which is why we made a point to arrive about 10 minutes before 11:00 AM so our group could be placed next to each other. There was only one family ahead of us. When we reached the counter, the employee, Dan M., told us—very curtly—that he could not check us in until exactly 11:00 AM, or he would have to charge us the full regular rate, forcing us to stand and wait until 11:00 on the dot before he would ring us up.
Because of his poor attitude right from the start, I actually suggested we leave and go elsewhere (Apex offers a family bowling deal that includes shoes, food, and drinks). Unfortunately, some of our group had not yet arrived, making it difficult to change plans at the last minute.
At 11:00 AM, we were finally allowed to sign in. Dan asked for our total party count and then placed our entire large group across only four lanes, with some lanes having up to seven people total (adults and children). Several members of our party go there frequently and reassured us that it should be fine since it was unlimited bowling from 11:00–4:00, and we would have plenty of time.
We ordered multiple pizzas, pitchers of soda, and several appetizer platters. Between getting shoes, balls, ramps for small children, requesting bumpers, and settling everyone in, a significant amount of time passed—as expected when bowling with families.
About two hours in, after many of us had only bowled 1–1.5 games, a message appeared stating our bowling session was over and we would need to pay again to continue. We went back to the counter and showed Dan both the online advertisement and the promotional signage displayed directly above his head, but he showed zero concern and refused to honor the advertised deal. The only terms and conditions listed were that shoe rentals were not included and must be paid for separately.
We were also told that the “unlimited” arcade passes were only valid for two hours, which is not what was stated in the advertisement.
To make matters worse, after our bowling ended, Dan came over and asked us to move from our area before we had even finished our food and drinks, while our children were still actively waiting to use the arcade passes we had already paid for. We explained that:
- He overfilled our lanes, making it impossible to bowl efficiently
- The advertised promotion was not honored
- We spent a significant amount of money on food and arcade cards
-We were not even occupying the tables directly behind the lanes
We refused to move from that one table, as we were still actively using services we had already paid for. He expressed frustration with our response and walked away.
This entire experience was misleading, poorly managed, and compounded by extremely poor customer service. If AMF Mattydale is going to advertise “unlimited” family promotions, they need to honor those promotions, manage lane assignments responsibly, and ensure staff treat families with basic courtesy and professionalism.
We’re sharing our experience in hopes it helps other families avoid the same frustrations.
