Within just a few minutes of entering the store, we were made extremely uncomfortable by the behavior of one of the staff members. The first associate who approached us was respectful and maintained an appropriate distance. However, the next associate (an older woman with grey hair) followed us at a distance of only about 2–3 feet for nearly the entire time we were in the store. As someone who has worked in high-end retail for many years, I fully understand the importance of loss prevention practices, but this level of proximity to customers is completely inappropriate. I could not even try on a pair of gloves without her standing directly beside me. Because of this experience, my partner and I decided to leave the store without purchasing most of the items we had planned to buy. I have shopped at many REI locations and have never encountered treatment like this.
