- MMMartin MartinNov 29, 20173.0First let me say that the accommodations and food were excellent. The owners were very nice, and the guide was friendly and always on time. The weather was windy and cold, so we knew the deer would be holed up for a while. The terrain we hunted was mostly open range land, and some coulees with scattered vegetation. We did see quite a few deer, mostly smaller bucks with a couple larger ones once in a while. Since the rut had not started, this was expected. What was not expected was how much time we spent sitting in the truck driving around. We were never more than 100 yards from the truck and did most of the glassing from the truck. During an 8-10 hour day of "hunting", I probably spent 6-7 hours sitting in the truck. Pretty much it was guided "road hunting". Even though it was a rifle hunt, I took my bow and the only time I spent away from the truck was when I took it upon myself to spot and stalk a couple deer. The one time my buddy had a chance at a real nice deer, the guide apparently did not even know where they were as they ended up busting them out and only had to close 200 yards from the 400 we originally saw them at. Since this was our first, and probably last, guided hunt, I was generally disappointed in the fact that there was no real hunting at all. Drive around, glass for deer, drive closer. That was most of the day. Considering we paid a premium to hunt with Armells on private land, I really expected a little more effort at hunting, rather than having what I would consider an overpriced chauffeur. I believe we could have done just as well ourselves with just a map of the area. Follow up: The response from Armelss was a phone call to get information. All they did was tell us that the deer we shot should not have been harvested as it was too small, they chewed out the guide, and then proceeded to tell us all about the monster deer the rest of their clients took. Made us feel like a bunch of Putz's!
