I stopped into REI today to buy some Christmas gifts and ended up spending just under $900 on jackets, a Yeti cooler, shoes, a pocket knife, a flashlight, and other items. Selection was fine, but the checkout experience completely soured the visit. I was being told after paying that REI is a âbaglessâ business and does not provide bagsâno paper bags, no options at all. I was left carrying armloads of merchandise out to my car in 9-degree weather, making multiple trips like I had just walked out of a garage sale, not a premium outdoor retailer. I donât understand how charging high-end retail prices while offering less basic service is justified under the guise of being environmentally friendly. For comparison, I went next door to Whole Foodsâarguably an even more eco-conscious brandâand they had paper bags available so customers could actually carry their purchases. This may sound minor, but when you spend close to $1,000 at a âpremiumâ store, basic customer service matters. Bags are not a luxuryâtheyâre a baseline expectation. Had I not already spent significant time shopping, I would have walked out on principle alone. Bottom line: If REI wants to position itself as a premium brand, it should offer basic conveniences like paper bags. Until then, I wonât be backâstrictly on principle. #garagesaleexit #garagesale
