I placed an online order using Apple Pay, which was later canceled by REI due to a fraud-related payment issue on their end. Despite the order being canceled, my credit card was still charged over $1,000, and the charge ultimately posted rather than dropping off as pending. I contacted REI customer service multiple times in an effort to resolve the issue directly. Unfortunately, each interaction was marked by confusion and a lack of clarity. Representatives repeatedly referred to the charge as a return or a different order, neither of which applied to my situation. I clearly explained that the order had been canceled by REI and that no items were received or returned, yet the issue remained unresolved. At times, the communication felt dismissive and rushed, and I did not feel that my concerns were being fully heard or addressed. After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter, I was left with no choice but to file a dispute with my credit card company in order to protect myself from an incorrect charge. As a result of this experience, I have: • Canceled my REI membership • Returned items I had intended to keep • Decided to purchase from other retailers going forward Billing accuracy, fraud handling, and clear communication are critical—especially for large purchases. Unfortunately, this experience fell well short of expectations. I hope REI takes feedback like this seriously and improves how canceled orders and payment disputes are handled.
